Creating Robust Antimicrobial Materials with Sticky Tyrocidines

Wilma van Rensburg et al.

Summary: Modified antimicrobial and antifouling materials and surfaces can effectively limit the propagation of microorganisms and reduce the occurrence of infection, transfer, and spoilage. Tyrocidines, naturally produced cyclo-decapeptides, have been found to readily associate with materials, particularly polysaccharide-type materials like cellulose. The association between tyrocidines and cellulose is unique and their antimicrobial activity remains active under various conditions.

Oligomerisation of tryptocidine C, a Trp-rich cyclodecapeptide from the antimicrobial tyrothricin complex

Marina Rautenbach et al.

Summary: Tryptocidine C is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial peptide produced by a soil bacterium, which can form stable dimers and tetramers. Studies on molecular conformational changes, aromatic stacking, and dynamic hydrogen-bonded interactions indicate cooperative oligomerization and formation of higher order structures within a certain concentration range.

The Influence of Cellulose-Type Formulants on Anti-Candida Activity of the Tyrocidines

Yasamin Masoudi et al.

Summary: Candida species show high adaptability and increasing drug resistance. Tyrocidines demonstrate synergistic activity with antifungal drugs, but can also exhibit toxicity. Formulating with soluble cellulose can improve stability and activity against Candida spp., with hydroxy-propyl-methyl cellulose showing the most promising results.

High throughput method to determine the surface activity of antimicrobial polymeric materials

Wilma van Rensburg et al.

Summary: The study suggests that a novel solid surface antimicrobial assay utilizing the metabolic active dye resazurin can rapidly detect the activity of antibiotic-containing cellulose disks, reducing the time required to obtain antibacterial results. This assay method can be used for high-throughput screening to identify novel sterilising materials for combating surface colonisation.

Peptide-based supramolecular hydrogels for bioimaging applications

Xiaoyang Liu et al.

Summary: Peptide-based supramolecular hydrogels with superior loading capacity and biocompatibility offer enhanced signal imaging for in vivo biological events. Through rational design of hydrogelators, the hydrogelation process can intelligently occur at pathological sites, allowing precise and sensitive bioimaging of diseases in vivo. Despite their importance in disease diagnosis, these biomaterials still face challenges in the field of bioimaging.
