A comprehensive review on the use of conductive materials to improve anaerobic digestion: Focusing on landfill leachate treatment

Summary: Globally, around 70% of waste is disposed of in open dumps or landfill sites, which generate leachate containing high concentrations of organic and inorganic compounds. Anaerobic digestion of landfill leachate is an environmentally-friendly method that converts organic compounds into methane-rich biogas. However, poor system stability, low methanogenic activity, and VFAs accumulation hinder the widespread application of anaerobic digestion. This review focuses on the use of conductive materials in landfill leachate treatment systems and discusses their impact on microbial growth, waste metabolism, methane production, and interspecies electron transfer.
