Structural controls on slope evolution and sediment dispersal pathways along the northern Tanzania continental margin, western Indian Ocean

Marina Dottore Stagna et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tectonic and stratigraphic evolution of the northern Tanzania margin to provide insights into the formation of Zanzibar and Pemba islands. By analyzing seismic reflection profiles and exploration wells, the researchers reconstructed the evolution of the submarine drainage network over the past 30 Myr and proposed a new conceptual model for the post-Oligocene evolution of the area. The study reveals the timing of uplift of the islands, with different tectonic events influencing their subaerial exposure since the Miocene.

The Davie Fracture Zone: A recorder of continents drifts and kinematic changes

Vincent Roche et al.

Summary: Transform continental margins are important in plate tectonics, and the exploration of these regions is still in its early stages. The Davie transform system in East Africa provides an excellent location to study the evolution of a major transform linking two oceanic basins. Through new basement and structural maps, it was found that the Davie Fracture Zone consists of several transform segments with two main trending directions related to a plate scale kinematic reorganization about 155 million years ago.

Redefining East African Rift System kinematics

D. S. Stamps et al.

Summary: The East African Rift System plate geometries and surface motions are among the least constrained in global plate motion models. Through the use of GPS data and geological data, it was found that Madagascar is fragmenting, with southern Madagascar rotating with the Lwandle microplate, and eastern and south-central Madagascar moving with the Somalian plate.

The crustal structure of the Kerimbas Basin across the offshore branch of the East African Rift System

Maren Vormann et al.

Summary: The study reveals the influence of the Davie Fracture Zone on the crustal structure in the northern Mozambique offshore area, with the formation of a continent-ocean transition zone due to rift activity. Despite recent seismicity, no significant crustal modifications or reduced seismic velocities were observed. The geological structures in the research area may have formed during an early Jurassic stage, with some regions possibly reactivated in a strike-slip sense during the Neogene.
