Large Air Quality and Public Health Impacts due to Amazonian Deforestation Fires in 2019

Edward W. Butt et al.

Summary: Air pollution from Amazon fires has negative impacts on human health, with an increase in deforestation leading to a rise in fire count and subsequent premature deaths. Analyzing data from 2003 to 2019, researchers estimate that reduced deforestation could greatly improve air quality and public health in the Amazon region.

Near-Surface Atmospheric Turbulence in the Presence of a Squall Line above a Forested and Deforested Region in the Central Amazon

Valeria L. Bezerra et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of squall lines generated along the northern coast of Brazil on the atmospheric structure as they moved westward into the Amazon. Changes in near-surface turbulent flow and ozone exchange were observed during the passage of the squall lines. The study found that squall lines can modify the vertical organization of turbulence over forested and deforested areas, resulting in changes in certain chemical processes near the surface.
