An Empirical Background Model for the NICER X-Ray Timing Instrument

Ronald A. Remillard et al.

Summary: The study utilized an empirical three-parameter model based on observations to predict the background spectrum of the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer. By applying filtering criteria to select background GTIs, the study estimated detection limits and identified the need for additional model parameters to improve predictions.

NICER observations of the evidence of Poynting-Robertson drag and disk reflection during type I X-ray bursts from 4U 1636-536

Guoying Zhao et al.

Summary: Type I X-ray bursts are the result of unstable thermonuclear burning on the surface of a neutron star, resulting in the release of energetic X-ray photons. These bursts interact with the surrounding accretion disk, increasing the accretion rate. By analyzing two photospheric radius expansion bursts in 4U 1636-536, it was found that the spectral fitting can be improved by considering enhanced persistent emission or reflection from the accretion disk. Evidence suggests that both Poynting-Robertson drag and disk reflection occurred during these bursts, and the disk reflection may contribute up to 20-30% of the total burst emissions.

A NICER look at thermonuclear X-ray bursts from Aql X-1

Tolga Guver et al.

Summary: In this study, spectral and temporal properties of X-ray bursts from Aql X-1 observed by NICER were analyzed. The results showed short recurrence burst events, significant increase in pre-burst emission with scaling factor, use of reflection models to improve spectral fitting, and highly ionized disc by burst emission with reprocessed emission fraction around 20%.

Probing spectral and temporal evolution of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1724-30 with AstroSat

Unnati Kashyap et al.

Summary: This paper presents a broad-band spectro-temporal study of the poorly studied accreting neutron star low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1724-30. The study shows that the X-ray spectra of the source can be modeled by a combination of thermal emission from the neutron star boundary layer or surface and non-thermal emission possibly from inverse Comptonization of the disc seed photons. The paper also reports the detection of a type-I X-ray burst displaying photospheric radius expansion.

Burst-Disk Interaction in 4U 1636-536 as Observed by NICER

Tolga Guver et al.

Summary: We detected 51 thermonuclear X-ray bursts from 4U 1636-536 using NICER over a 3-year monitoring campaign. Time-resolved spectroscopy for 40 of these bursts revealed a strong soft excess emission in all burst spectra. We characterized the excess emission using a scaling factor method as well as a model accounting for burst emission reflection off the accretion disk. Additionally, simultaneous observations with AstroSat and NuSTAR provided further confirmation of the main results.

On the Impact of an Intermediate Duration X-Ray Burst on the Accretion Environment in IGR J17062-6143

Peter Bult et al.

Summary: A spectroscopic analysis of X-ray emission from IGR J17062-6143 following an intermediate duration Type I X-ray burst in June 2020 revealed a severe depression in X-ray flux for three days, possibly due to the inner accretion disk restoring itself and evolving corona. Additionally, a 3.4 keV absorption line was tentatively identified as a gravitationally redshifted line from burning ashes on the stellar surface.
