Massive star-forming galaxies have converted most of their halo gas into stars

Ziwen Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, we analyze weak lensing and satellite kinematics for central galaxies and find that for a large population of massive star-forming galaxies with a mass of around 10^11M(circle dot), the efficiency of converting gas into stars is higher than 60%. This suggests that these galaxies are less affected by quenching processes, and current galaxy formation models cannot explain this phenomenon.

Ram pressure stripping in high-density environments

Alessandro Boselli et al.

Summary: Galaxies living in rich environments are affected by various perturbations. Among these, ram pressure stripping is a key process that removes the interstellar medium of galaxies and suppresses their star formation activity. This review summarizes the effects of this process on galaxies and highlights its importance in the evolution of galaxies of different masses.

Shocks in the stacked Sunyaev-Zel'dovich profiles of clusters II: Measurements from SPT-SZ plus Planck Compton-y map

D. Anbajagane et al.

Summary: In this study, we searched for the signature of cosmological shocks in the stacked gas pressure profiles of galaxy clusters. The analysis of data from the South Pole Telescope revealed two features: a pressure deficit and a sharp decrease in pressure, both consistent with shock-induced thermal non-equilibrium and accretion shocks. These features were observed in all cases, regardless of redshift and mass, and exhibited no significant differences along and across the cluster major axis.

The Abell 3391/95 galaxy cluster system: A 15 Mpc intergalactic medium emission filament, a warm gas bridge, infalling matter clumps, and (re-) accelerated plasma discovered by combining SRG/eROSITA data with ASKAP/EMU and DECam data

T. H. Reiprich et al.

Summary: The study aims to reveal the complexity of large-scale structure assembly process through new sensitive observations, comparing findings with cosmological model expectations. By incorporating various observational data sources, the research traces irregular morphology of warm and hot gas within clusters, detect matter clumps surrounding the system, and discover tantalizing hints for warm, truly primordial filamentary gas connecting the clusters. The findings provide impressive confirmation of theoretically expected structure formation processes, showing that baryons reside in large-scale warm-hot gas filaments with a clumpy structure.

COSMIC BIRTH: efficient Bayesian inference of the evolving cosmic web from galaxy surveys

Francisco-Shu Kitaura et al.

Summary: The COSMIC BIRTH algorithm is able to reconstruct the cosmic density fields from galaxy surveys on the light-cone by modeling the displacement and peculiar velocity fields at different redshift snapshots. It efficiently maps galaxies to a single high redshift, providing tracers and survey completeness in Lagrangian space, and can obtain the primordial density field in a numerical way using Lagrangian tracers. The method includes survey mask, non-linear and non-local bias, and redshift-space distortions with a significantly higher efficiency compared to previous methods.

Voyage through the hidden physics of the cosmic web

Aurora Simionescu et al.

Summary: The majority of ordinary matter in the local Universe is in a hot, diffuse, X-ray emitting plasma that is largely unexplored. A next-generation Cosmic Web Explorer is proposed to understand these unseen baryons, reaching accretion shocks farther than virial radii of galaxy clusters and revealing out-of-equilibrium parts of the intra-cluster medium. The proposed X-ray satellite will connect the large-scale structure by mapping hot diffuse gas in the cosmic web, with high spectral resolution, low instrumental background, and high sensitivity to faint, extended emission.

Summary: This study uses SRG/eROSITA X-ray data to examine the morphology of the Coma cluster and finds evidence of a recent merger with the NGC 4839 group, creating a faint X-ray bridge. The gas in the core undergoes two shocks, resulting in the formation of a radio halo in the cluster.

Predictions for anisotropic X-ray signatures in the circumgalactic medium: imprints of supermassive black hole driven outflows

Nhut Truong et al.

Summary: Through the use of IllustrisTNG simulations, we studied the anisotropic properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around massive galaxies, finding significant density, temperature, and metallicity signals near these galaxies. This anisotropy is influenced by factors such as galaxy stellar mass, halo mass, distance, and supermassive black hole mass, with the effects of anisotropy diminishing as distance increases.

Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Modeling the gas thermodynamics in BOSS CMASS galaxies from kinematic and thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich measurements

Stefania Amodeo et al.

Summary: The thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects provide insights into the thermodynamic properties of the circumgalactic and intracluster medium of galaxies. By combining kSZ and tSZ measurements, the study found that less than 20% of the total pressure within the virial radius is due to a nonthermal component. The comparison to cosmological simulations showed discrepancies in CGM pressure and density at larger radii, indicating potential issues with energy injection in feedback models.

Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Combined kinematic and thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich measurements from BOSS CMASS and LOWZ halos

Emmanuel Schaan et al.

Summary: This research utilizes combined microwave maps from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and Planck satellite, along with galaxy catalogs from astrophysical surveys, to study the gas properties in galaxy clusters. The results reveal important information about the gas density profile compared to dark matter, and also measure both tSZ and kSZ signals, providing insights into the internal gas dynamics of galaxy groups.
