Galaxy populations in the Hydra I cluster from the VEGAS survey I. Optical properties of a large sample of dwarf galaxies

Antonio La Marca et al.

Summary: Analyzing the properties of dwarf galaxies in the Hydra I cluster provides insights into their evolution. The size of the cluster does not affect the scaling relations of dwarf galaxies. Ram pressure stripping in high-density environments

Alessandro Boselli et al.

Summary: Galaxies living in rich environments are affected by various perturbations. Among these, ram pressure stripping is a key process that removes the interstellar medium of galaxies and suppresses their star formation activity. This review summarizes the effects of this process on galaxies and highlights its importance in the evolution of galaxies of different masses.

Galaxy populations in the Hydra I cluster from the VEGAS survey II. The ultra-diffuse galaxy population

Antonio La Marca et al.

Summary: In this study, we expand the catalog of low-surface brightness (LSB) galaxies, including ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates, near the Hydra I cluster of galaxies using deep images from the VST Early-type Galaxy Survey (VEGAS). We find 11 UDGs and 8 additional LSB galaxies using an automatic detection tool and visual inspections. We evaluate their cluster membership and find that they have a wide range of surface brightness, radius, and color, and have similar distributions to dwarf galaxies.

A blind ATCA HI survey of the Fornax galaxy cluster: Properties of the HI detections

Summary: The HI detections in the Fornax galaxy cluster show that most galaxies have lower HI mass and form stars at a lower rate. These recent arrivals have been interacting with other galaxies, the large-scale potential or the intergalactic medium. Deeper inside the cluster, HI removal is likely to proceed faster.

Investigating the projected phase space of Gaussian and non-Gaussian clusters

V. M. Sampaio et al.

Summary: Using the projected phase space (PPS), we examined galaxy properties and their relation to cluster environment in a subsample of groups from the Yang catalogue. Our results show that NG clusters, characterized by a non-Gaussian velocity distribution, have a more mixed distribution of galaxy properties in the PPS compared to G clusters. Additionally, NG clusters accreted more stellar mass in the last 5 Gyr than G clusters, with F galaxies in NG clusters being older and more metal-rich compared to those in G systems. These findings indicate that NG clusters provide a different environment for studying galaxy evolution with a higher accretion of pre-processed galaxies.

LoTSS jellyfish galaxies: I. Radio tails in low redshift clusters

I. D. Roberts et al.

Summary: The cluster environment has a significant impact on galaxy star formation, with clusters hosting more red, passive galaxies compared to the field. Ram pressure stripping is believed to drive this environmental quenching by stripping cold gas directly from galactic disks, leading to the formation of 'jellyfish galaxies' with stripped gas extending beyond the galaxy's optical extent. The study identifies a large sample of jellyfish galaxies with enhanced star formation in low redshift clusters through the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), providing valuable insights into ram pressure stripping and star formation quenching in nearby galaxy clusters.

Formation of an ultra-diffuse galaxy in the stellar filaments of NGC 3314A: Caught in the act?

Enrichetta Iodice et al.

Summary: The VEGAS imaging survey of the Hydra I cluster has identified a faint and diffuse ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG 32) located within the extended network of stellar filaments near the spiral galaxy NGC 3314A. While the exact origin of UDG 32 is still uncertain, its spatial coincidence with the stellar filaments of NGC 3314A suggests a possible formation from material within the filaments. Further analysis is needed to determine the nature of the stellar filaments and the formation processes of UDG 32 in the Hydra I cluster.

WALLABY Pre-Pilot Survey: the effects of angular momentum and environment on the Hi gas and star formation properties of galaxies in the Eridanus supergroup

C. Murugeshan et al.

Summary: Using high-resolution ASKAP observations of galaxies in the Eridanus supergroup, we studied their HI, angular momentum, and star formation properties, finding consistency with previous works. Environmental processes, such as tidal interactions, were found to significantly impact the relationship between atomic gas fraction and integrated atomic disc stability parameter in Eridanus galaxies. The majority of Eridanus galaxies were also found to be HI deficient compared to normal star-forming galaxies in the field, with indications of suppression in star formation due to their environment.

The Dawes Review 9: The role of cold gas stripping on the star formation quenching of satellite galaxies

L. Cortese et al.

Summary: One of the key questions in extragalactic astronomy is the impact of cold gas on star formation in galaxies. It is debated how the removal of cold gas affects the formation of new stars, with discussions on the dominant physical mechanisms involved. Studies suggest that while internal processes alone may not fully stop star formation in satellite galaxies, the environment plays an important, if not dominant, role in regulating this process.

Pre-processing, group accretion, and the orbital trajectories of associated subhaloes

Lucie Bakels et al.

Summary: The study reveals that around 21% of subhaloes around isolated hosts are currently on their first infall, with 44% still approaching their first apocentre after infall. Approximately half of all accreted systems were pre-processed prior to infall, and about 20% were accreted in groups. The variations in orbital energy and ratio of sequent apocentres for accreted systems are caused by initial accretion, dissolution of loosely bound groups, and penetrating encounters between subhaloes on subsequent orbits.
