Pros and cons: Is faecal microbiota transplantation a safe and efficient treatment option for gut dysbiosis?

Tom Marrs et al.

Summary: FMT has been established as an effective treatment for CDI and is now being explored for use in other immune-mediated pathologies such as allergic diseases. Despite controversies, dysbiosis in the gut microbiota provides a rationale for the application of FMT in these pathologies.

Elevated White Blood Cell Count Does Not Predict Clostridium difficile Nucleic Acid Testing Results

Summary: Elevated white blood cell count can predict Clostridium difficile infection results, but with low accuracy in inpatient settings. Elevated white blood cell count in CDI patients is associated with longer hospital stays and increased risk of mortality.

Gut microbiota profiles in diarrheic patients with co-occurrence of Clostridioides difficile and Blastocystis

Laura Vega et al.

Summary: This study investigated the co-occurrence of Blastocystis and Clostridioides difficile infections in patients, revealing a higher abundance of beneficial bacteria in B+/C+ patients. No statistical differences were observed in eukaryotic communities between the study groups. This provides preliminary descriptive information on potential microbiota profiling in this rare scenario.

Microbiota-based markers predictive of development of Clostridioides difficile infection

Matilda Berkell et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the intestinal microbiota of patients who develop CDI have lower diversity and are enriched in specific bacteria such as Enterococcus, while lacking other bacteria, before antibiotic treatment. Dysbiosis induced by antibiotics is class-specific, with beta-lactams further increasing the abundance of Enterococcus. These findings can be utilized to identify high-risk patients and develop predictive microbiota-based diagnostics for the management of CDI.

Alteration of the Gut Microbiome in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients and Its Association With Serum Free Immunoglobulin Light Chains

Fengping Liu et al.

Summary: This study confirmed gut dysbiosis in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) while investigating the impact of the microbiome on CKD and its association with serum free immunoglobulin light chain (FLC) levels. The results showed a significant difference in bacterial community between CKD patients and healthy controls, with specific bacterial enrichments and metabolic pathways predicting CKD prevalence and FLC levels. The findings indicate a crosstalk between the microbiome and immune response in CKD, highlighting the importance of gut dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Mortality Following Clostridioides difficile Infection in Europe: A Retrospective Multicenter Case-Control Study

Jacek Czepiel et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the clinical presentation, treatment, outcome, and factors associated with mortality in Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) over a 90-day period. Older age, inadequate CDI therapy, cachexia, malignancy, Charlson Index, long-term care, elevated white blood cell count (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), bacteraemia, complications, and cognitive impairment were independently related with death during CDI. Additionally, factors such as older age, higher levels of WBC, neutrophil, CRP or creatinine, the presence of malignancy, cognitive impairment, and complications were strongly correlated with a shorter time from CDI diagnosis to death.

Gut microbiota composition in health-care facility-and community-onset diarrheic patients with Clostridioides difficile infection

Giovanny Herrera et al.

Summary: The role of gut microbiota in the establishment and development of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) has been widely discussed. Different microbiota compositions were found in CDI positive groups, with intrahospital-acquired diarrhea playing a significant role in modulating bacterial, archaea, and eukaryotic populations in the intestines. Interactions between bacteria and eukaryotes in the intestinal ecosystem were also highlighted as important for understanding CDI pathophysiology.

Integrating gut microbiome and host immune markers to understand the pathogenesis of Clostridioides difficile infection

Shanlin Ke et al.

Summary: The study highlights the sensitivity of interactions between gut microbiota and host immune markers to the status of C. difficile colonization and infection. Utilizing both types of data can improve the distinction between CDI and other groups. Symbolic classification using selected features resulted in simple mathematical formulas that explicitly quantify the interactions between the gut microbiome and host immune markers.

Role of high-risk antibiotic use in incidence of health-care-associated Clostridioides difficile infection in Quebec, Canada: a population-level ecological study

Elise Fortin et al.

Summary: The study found that the incidence of health-care-associated C difficile infections has been declining in the Canadian province of Quebec since 2015, but changes in high-risk antibiotic use do not entirely account for this decrease. Further studies are needed to understand factors implicated in the change in epidemiology of health-care-associated C difficile infections.

Summary: The study on patients with Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) found that white blood cell count, albumin values, and ATLAS scores varied among patients of different severities. Hypoalbuminemia and high ATLAS scores in hypotensive CDI patients may be predictive of shock, ileus, or megacolon.

Gut Bacteroides species in health and disease

Hassan Zafar et al.

Summary: The functional diversity of the mammalian intestinal microbiome far exceeds that of the host organism, and microbial genes contribute substantially to the well-being of the host; beneficial gut organisms can also be pathogenic when present in the gut or other locations in the body; Bacteroides metabolize polysaccharides and oligosaccharides, providing nutrition and vitamins to the host and other intestinal microbial residents.
