The fungal root endophyte Serendipita vermifera displays inter-kingdom synergistic beneficial effects with the microbiota in Arabidopsis thaliana and barley

Lisa K. Mahdi et al.

Summary: Plant root-associated bacteria can protect against pathogen infections, while root endophytic fungi combined with core bacterial members provide synergistic protection. The early growth promotion benefits of these interactions are dependent on the host and microbiota composition, and are associated with modulation of microbial effectors and carbohydrate-active enzymes instead of extensive host transcriptional reprogramming.

Functional attractors in microbial community assembly

Sylvie Estrela et al.

Summary: The study found that family-level convergence in microbial communities reflects a reproducible metabolic organization, while taxonomic divergence among replicate communities arises from multistability in population dynamics. Multistability can lead to alternative functional states in closed ecosystems but not in metacommunities.

Species- and site-specific genome editing in complex bacterial communities

Benjamin E. Rubin et al.

Summary: This study presents a generalizable strategy for editing the genomes of specific organisms in microbial communities, using environmental transformation sequencing (ET-seq) and DNA-editing all-in-one RNA-guided CRISPR-Cas transposase (DART) systems to achieve species- and site-specific genetic manipulation.

Terrestrial-type nitrogen-fixing symbiosis between seagrass and a marine bacterium

Wiebke Mohr et al.

Summary: Symbiotic N-2-fixing microorganisms play a crucial role in nitrogen assimilation by eukaryotes in nitrogen-limited environments. The symbiotic relationship between 'Candidatus Celerinatantimonas neptuna' and its host Posidonia oceanica allows highly productive seagrass meadows to thrive in the Mediterranean Sea. This symbiosis is similar to that of terrestrial N-2-fixing plant symbioses and may have enabled flowering plants to thrive in nitrogen-poor marine habitats.

Above-ground parts of white grapevine Vitis vinifera cv. Furmint share core members of the fungal microbiome

Daniel G. Knapp et al.

Summary: The study characterized the fungal microbiome of Furmint grapevines in the Tokaj wine region of Hungary, collecting samples from different seasons, sites, and plant parts. It was found that the different shoot parts of the Furmint grapevines in these regions harbor a common core group of fungal community.

Host-associated microbe PCR (hamPCR) enables convenient measurement of both microbial load and community composition

Derek S. Lundberg et al.

Summary: hamPCR is a robust strategy to quantify microbial load and describe interkingdom microbial community composition, providing an accessible experimental solution to the limitations and statistical challenges of compositional data in culture-independent microbiology.

Plant flavones enrich rhizosphere Oxalobacteraceae to improve maize performance under nitrogen deprivation

Peng Yu et al.

Summary: This study elucidates the genetic basis of the reciprocal interactions between root architecture and specific microbial communities in the rhizosphere, leading to improved plant performance. It also highlights the role of root-derived flavones in promoting the enrichment of beneficial bacterial taxa.
