Loss of glutamate transporter eaat2a leads to aberrant neuronal excitability, recurrent epileptic seizures, and basal hypoactivity

Adriana L. Hotz et al.

Summary: The loss of function in the astroglia predominant eaat2a gene in zebrafish leads to altered neuronal and astroglial networks, resulting in epileptic seizures and increased extracellular glutamate levels. Interestingly, while hyperexcitability is observed during seizures, basal neuronal and astroglial activity is reduced, leading to decreased overall locomotion in eaat2a(-/-) mutant animals.

Dispersed Crude Oil Induces Dysbiosis in the Red Snapper Lutjanus campechanus External Microbiota

Andrea M. Tarnecki et al.

Summary: The fish external microbiota competitively excludes pathogens and prevents proliferation of opportunistic organisms. Prolonged exposure to dispersed oil leads to dysbiosis in fish external microbiota, reducing the host's immune response to pathogens.

Sediment quality assessment combining chemical and biological (non) target analysis

Youmi Choi et al.

Summary: This study found different organic contaminants in the contaminated sediments of Korean bays, which had sub-lethal effects on the development of flounder embryos. By combining chemical and biological analyses, as well as high-throughput sequencing techniques, the major chemical groups causing sediment toxicity could be accurately assessed.

Behavioral Changes in a Coastal Marine Fish Lead to Increased Predation Risk Following Oil Exposure

Alexis J. Khursigara et al.

Summary: Exposure to crude oil has been shown to lead to reduced sociability and poor habitat selection in fish, corresponding with increased predation risk. The study suggests that behavioral impairment may be more sensitive than cardiorespiratory injury and could be a more significant driver of ecological risk in marine species following oil exposure.
