Effects of Salinity on Physiological, Biochemical and Gene Expression Parameters of Black Tiger Shrimp (Penaeus monodon): Potential for Farming in Low-Salinity Environments

Md. Lifat Rahi et al.

Summary: White spot disease is a major obstacle for black tiger shrimp production, but the study suggests the farming potential of black tiger shrimp in freshwater environments with minimal effects on production performance by proper acclimation. Salinity levels significantly affect growth, metabolism, immunity and survival of aquatic species, with the highest growth and survival performance observed at 20 parts per thousand salinity.

Sensorial attributes and growth performance of whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) cultured in biofloc technology with varying water salinity and dietary protein content

Sara Mello Pinho et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the sensory attributes and zootechnical performance of whiteleg shrimp juveniles cultured in biofloc technology with varying water salinities and proteinous feed. Shrimp growth and productivity were significantly affected by salinity and protein levels, with the highest growth achieved in 30 ppt water with 35% CP. Sensorial attributes of shrimp were similar in all experimental treatments, regardless of salinity or dietary crude protein levels.

Supplementation of coated and uncoated crystalline amino acid mix in formulating a low-fishmeal diet for Penaeus monodon (Fabricius, 1798): Effect on growth, digestibility, body composition, haemolymph indices and nitrogen metabolism

Vanjiappan Rajaram et al.

Summary: In a feeding trial with Penaeus monodon, it was found that the addition of coated CAA can reduce amino acid leaching and improve shrimp growth rate, while diets without CAA supplementation resulted in poor feed conversion ratio.

Combined effects of high salinity and ammonia-N exposure on the energy metabolism, immune response, oxidative resistance and ammonia metabolism of the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

Jinnan Long et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined effects of high salinity and ammonia nitrogen on Litopenaeus vannamei, finding significant impacts on energy metabolism, immune response, oxidative resistance, and ammonia metabolism. The results indicated alterations in glucose levels, lactate levels, immune responses, antioxidant defense system, and ammonia metabolism-related gene expressions in response to the stressors. The study highlights the synergistic effects of high salinity and ammonia stress beyond optimal ranges on various physiological processes in shrimp.
