Comparison of the Transient Behaviors of Bubbling and Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustors

Guillermo Martinez Castilla et al.

Summary: This study compares the transient behaviors of the flue gas sides of large-scale bubbling and circulating fluidized bed boilers. It finds that the heat transfer to the waterwalls stabilizes more rapidly in bubbling bed units during load changes. The differences in stabilization time between the dense bed and the top of the furnace are attributed to the distribution of solids along the combustor. The effect of characteristic times of the main in-furnace mechanisms on the dynamic performance of both types of units has been investigated and expressed through proposed mathematical relationships.

Assessment of utilization of combined heat and power systems to provide grid flexibility alongside variable renewable energy systems

Takuma Takeshita et al.

Summary: This study assesses the potential of utilizing combined heat and power systems to provide grid flexibility, focusing on the greater Tokyo area. The results demonstrate that introducing time-of-use rates can reduce consumers' energy costs and the provision of flexibility is largely dependent on the facilities' heat-to-electricity ratios.

Dynamic Modeling of the Reactive Side in Large-Scale Fluidized Bed Boilers

Guillermo Martinez Castilla et al.

Summary: This study presents a dynamic model of the reactive side of large-scale fluidized bed boilers, validated against operational data from industrial units, and analyzes the performance of the boilers under transient conditions. The results highlight the key role of heat capacity in stabilization time, and show that gas velocity and load condition also affect the stability of the boilers.
