Connectivity, permeability and flow channelization in fractured karst reservoirs: A numerical investigation based on a two-dimensional discrete fracture-cave network model

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Fractured karst reservoirs are important for hydrocarbon reserves and groundwater storage, but their complex heterogeneities pose challenges in characterizing their connectivity and hydraulic conductivity. This study proposes an analytical formulation to characterize the connectivity of discrete fracture-cave networks and explores the relationship between connectivity and permeability through numerical simulations. The results show a power law scaling between connectivity and permeability, with significant flow channeling occurring around the percolation threshold.

Impact of fracture shear dilation on long-term heat extraction in Enhanced Geothermal Systems: Insights from a fully-coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical simulation

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that shear dilation of fractures is influenced by pore pressure and thermal stress, resulting in the formation of flow channels and changes in heat transfer performance, thereby affecting heat extraction efficiency. Considering fracture shear dilation and fully-coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviors is crucial when evaluating the long-term performance and efficiency of heat extraction in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGSs).

Combined Effects of Thermal Perturbation and In-situ Stress on Heat Transfer in Fractured Geothermal Reservoirs

Zhixue Sun et al.

Summary: A new fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model was developed to study the combined effects of thermal perturbation and in-situ stress on heat transfer in two-dimensional fractured rocks. The study identified underlying mechanisms and revealed significant impacts of in-situ stress on fracture apertures and flow rates, affecting heat transfer predictions. The results emphasize the importance of considering in-situ stress effects for accurate assessments of heat extraction efficiency in geothermal reservoirs.

Evaluation of Connectivity Characteristics on the Permeability of Two-Dimensional Fracture Networks Using Geological Entropy

Zuyang Ye et al.

Summary: A systematic approach has been developed to estimate the relationship between permeability and connectivity in two-dimensional fracture networks using the concept of geological entropy. The entropic scale is positively correlated with permeability concerning aperture, quantifying network connectivity. Permeability is inversely proportional to length and proportional to spacing, with weak dependence on orientation.
