Time-Dependent Friction Effects on Vibrational Infrared Frequencies and Line Shapes of Liquid Water

Florian N. Bruenig et al.

Summary: In this study, ab initio simulations were performed to investigate the friction functions and effective bond potentials for the OH stretch and HOH bend vibrations in liquid water. The results showed that intermolecular interactions resulted in the softening of the stretch and bend potentials, leading to a red-shift of the vibrational bands. However, nonadiabatic friction contributions caused a blue shift in the spectra. The observed line broadening in liquid water was found to be approximately equal due to adiabatic and nonadiabatic friction contributions for both the stretch and bend modes.

Surface Layer Alteration of Multi-Oxide Silicate Glasses at a Near-Neutral pH in the Presence of Citric and Tartaric Acid

Juho Yliniemi

Summary: This study investigated the chemical alterations occurring at the surface of multi-oxide silicate glasses in the presence of organic ligands-citrate and tartrate-at a near-neutral pH. The presence of organic ligands prevented the accumulation of aluminum and iron on the surface and increased their concentration in the solution. The ligands also decreased the effective concentration of aluminum and iron in the solution, resulting in surface destabilization and increased dissolution.

Utilization of waste apricot kernel shell derived-activated carbon as carrier framework for effective shape-stabilization and thermal conductivity enhancement of organic phase change materials used for thermal energy storage

Gokhan Hekimoglu et al.

Summary: In this study, low-cost and eco-friendly activated carbon obtained from waste apricot kernel shells was used to improve the thermal conductivity of organic phase change materials (Capric-Myristic acid, Lauryl alcohol, n-Octadecane, and Polyethylene glycol) while addressing their inherent drawbacks. The composites showed high loading rates and latent heat capacity of the phase change materials, as well as excellent thermal degradation resistance and cycling stability. The thermal conductivity of the composites was significantly higher than that of the pure phase change materials, making them suitable for low-temperature thermal management of buildings.

In-Situ surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy study of electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol on Platinum/Gold surface

Po-Hsuan Yeh et al.

Summary: The behavior of the ethanol oxidation reaction on composite electrodes prepared by depositing platinum on a gold surface (Pt/Au) was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) analysis. The Pt electrode showed high oxidation activity and significant poison behavior, while the Au electrode exhibited low activity without a poison peak. SEIRAS analyses revealed the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) during anode sweeping, with the CO peak density decreasing and eventually disappearing as the potential increased. During cathodic scanning, the CO peak reappeared and its intensity increased with scanning cycles, indicating a high poison behavior and the C1 reaction route on Pt. On the Au electrode, CO2 and CO peaks were not observed, but an acetic acid peak appeared, indicating a C2 reaction path. The electrochemical activities and poison behavior of the Pt/Au composite electrodes increased with the deposition amount of Pt. However, the intensity of the poison peaks was smaller than that of the oxidation peaks, indicating a higher tolerance to CO poison. For the 2 m-Pt/Au composite electrode, the activity was comparable to that of pure Pt, but the poison tolerance was three times higher than that of Pt.

Numerical study of the convective heat transfer coefficient of the hand and the effect of wind

Mengying Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of wind speed and direction on the convective heat transfer coefficient of the human hand through computational fluid dynamics simulation, finding that different hand sections have varying local convective heat transfer coefficients due to specific geometry. The convective heat transfer coefficients of the fingers were higher than those of other hand sections, and increasing wind speed led to an overall increase in convective heat transfer coefficient of the hand, while wind direction had differing impacts on individual hand sections.

Superior thermal energy storage performance of NaCl-SWCNT composite phase change materials: A molecular dynamics approach

Yinsheng Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal properties and microstructure of NaCl and single-walled carbon nanotubes (NaCl-SWCNT) based composite phase change materials using molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that the addition of SWCNT can effectively reduce the melting point of molten salts, increase thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity, but decrease melting enthalpy. These phenomena are attributed to the variation of atomic energy at the nanoscale.

Localized heating element distribution in composite metal foam-phase change material: Fourier's law and creeping flow effects

Pouyan Talebizadeh Sardari et al.

Summary: A numerical parametric study was conducted on a domestic thermal storage heat exchanger with highly localized positive temperature coefficient cylindrical heating elements in a phase change material (PCM) with conductive enhancement by open-pore metal foam. It was found that optimizing the charge time and exit air temperature can be achieved by varying the position, diameter, and temperature of the heating elements. The results indicated that the PCM inside the metal foam mostly follows Fourier's law, while the creeping flow of molten PCM in the pores of the porous medium has a negligible influence on heat transfer.
