Effect of multilayer CrN/CrAlN coating on the corrosion and contact resistance behavior of 316L SS bipolar plate for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell

S. Pugal Mani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deposition of CrN, CrAlN, and CrN/CrAlN coatings on 316L stainless steel to enhance corrosion resistance and reduce interfacial contact resistance in high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The results show that CrN/CrAlN coating provides superior protection with a high protective efficiency and lower interfacial contact resistance compared to single CrN and CrAlN coatings.

Balancing the corrosion resistance and through-plane electrical conductivity of Cr coating via oxygen plasma treatment

Xian-Zong Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that multilayer Cr coatings deposited using magnetron sputtering with remote inductively coupled oxygen plasma (O-ICP) can effectively balance corrosion resistance and through-plane electrical conductivity. The optimized O-ICP treatment forms a Cr oxide layer (CrO*) on the surface, demonstrating superior performance.

Potential polarization accelerated degradation of interfacial electrical conductivity for Au/TiN coated 316L SS bipolar plates used in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Xian-Zong Wang et al.

Summary: The influence of four potential polarization types on the interfacial contact resistance of Au/TiN coated bipolar plates was investigated, showing that the coating has potential for commercial application with low ICR under certain polarization conditions but significant delamination under cyclic combined polarization. Analysis suggests that a 4-6% Au surface coverage is critical for achieving the target ICR of the coated metal bipolar plates.
