An uncharacteristically low-potential flavin governs the energy landscape of electron bifurcation

Courtney E. Wise et al.

Summary: Electron bifurcation is an energy-conserving process widely utilized in biochemistry, which generates high-energy products from substrates with lower reducing potential. The energetic challenge of the first bifurcation event, with a thermodynamically uphill step, is resolved by elucidating the unusually low two-electron potential of the bifurcating flavin.

Spectroscopic methodologies and computational simulation studies on the characterization of the interaction between human serum albumin and astragalin

ShaoLi Lyu et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the interactions between AST and HSA, revealing that AST could reduce the intrinsic fluorescence of HSA through static quenching and non-radiative energy transfer. The major binding forces involved in the process were hydrogen bond, van der Walls force, and hydrophobic interaction.

Production routes to tailor the performance of cellulose nanocrystals

Oriana M. Vanderfleet et al.

Summary: This Review evaluates the properties of CNCs from more than 30 production routes and 40 biomass sources to guide users in selecting the right material for their desired application. CNCs produced by various methods are assessed against three target properties: colloidal stability, size, and crystallinity index. Alternative production routes and starting materials are suggested to overcome challenges associated with CNC use, including improving compatibility with hydrophobic materials, resistance to thermal degradation, and colloidal stability in high ionic strength environments.

Development of mucoadhesive hydrogels based on polyacrylic acid grafted cellulose nanocrystals for local cisplatin delivery

Mohammad Reza Vakili et al.

Summary: A mucoadhesive hydrogel with superior properties for localized delivery of cisplatin to colorectal cancer was developed by grafting poly(acrylic acid) on cellulose nanocrystals to form a hardcore bottle-brush polymer. The developed CNC-g-PAA9 showed beneficial mucoadhesive characteristics and significantly increased the anticancer activity against HCT116 cells. This approach holds great promise for localized platinum delivery in colorectal cancer treatment.

Fluorescently Labeled Cellulose Nanofibers for Environmental Health and Safety Studies

Ilabahen Patel et al.

Summary: An optimal methodology for locating and tracking cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) is crucial to evaluate the environmental health and safety properties of these nanomaterials. A new boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) reactive fluorescent probe, meso-DichlorotriazineEthyl BODIPY (mDTEB), was used to label CNFs for ingestion exposure studies. The photoluminescence properties of mDTEB-labeled CNFs include excellent stability and high quantum yield. In vitro and in vivo studies showed that CNFs and mDTEB-labeled CNFs did not exhibit cytotoxicity.
