Surface strain and co-doping effect on Sm and Y co-doped BaCeO3 in proton conducting solid oxide fuel cells

Lei He et al.

Summary: This study found that a 1% tensile strain is most favorable for enhancing the degree of surface hydration and proton transport, helping to weaken the negative effects of the space charge layer formed by the accumulation of positive charges on the surface. Furthermore, the collocation of Sm and Y has a synergistic effect, with Sm facilitating oxygen vacancy formation and Y promoting hydration reaction.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of Zn incorporation into the lattice of Fe3C, CoCx and Ni3C on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance, resulting in the formation of Co3ZnC, Fe3ZnC and Ni3ZnC electrocatalysts. Fe3ZnC and Co3ZnC show the most positive onset potential and half-wave potential, with Fe3ZnC exhibiting the highest current density and good methanol tolerance. The study presents a simple chemical strategy to enhance the ORR activity of binary metal carbides for fuel applications.

A new perspective of co-doping and Nd segregation effect on proton stability and transportation in Y and Nd co-doped BaCeO3

Lei He et al.

Summary: In this study, bulk and surface properties of proton stability and transportation in Y and Nd co-doped BaCeO3 were investigated by first-principles calculations. It was found that Nd doping promotes oxygen vacancy formation but reduces proton stability. Nd segregation facilitates both proton hydration and transportation near the surface, as well as beneficial for proton transportation between grains at the grain boundary.

Unveiling The Effect of Dopants on the Hydration Reaction and Proton Conduction of Nd and Y Co-Doped BaZrO3 in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Lei He et al.

Summary: This study utilized first-principles calculations to investigate the effects of Nd and Y co-doping on the surface and bulk properties of hydration reaction and proton conduction in BaZrO3. The results showed that Nd and Y promoted the accumulation of oxygen vacancies and protons on the surface, facilitating the hydration reaction and promoting proton transmission. The segregation of Nd and Y also had beneficial effects on proton transport through grain boundaries in BZNY.

Influence of Fe and Ni Doping on the OER Performance at the Co3O4(001) Surface: Insights from DFT plus U Calculations

Yuman Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the Co3O4(001) surface was investigated using density functional theory calculations with an on-site Hubbard U term. The results show that the termination with octahedral Co and O ions (B-layer) has the lowest overpotential, and doping with Fe and Ni can effectively reduce the overpotential. Additionally, changes in oxidation states of surface ions and active sites of Co during OER were analyzed to gain further insight into the behavior of the system.

Transition Metal-Promoted VC(001) for Overall Water Splitting and Oxygen Reduction

Rong Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential performance of transition metal-doped VC(001) systems on the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) using density functional theory calculations. The results show that transition metals improve the weak binding between hydrogen and the surface, enhancing overall catalytic activity. Ir-doped VC(001) exhibits promising trifunctional electrocatalytic activity, while Pt-doped VC(001) is expected to be a bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting. The Fermi-abundance model helps to understand the origins of these activities in TM-doped VC(001) structures.

Investigation of Strain and Transition-Metal Doping Effect on Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Catalysts of Mo2C, MoP, and Ni2P

Feng Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of strain and transition-metal doping on high-performance HER catalysts Mo2C, MoP, and Ni2P. It was found that applying a certain amount of strain can enhance the catalytic performance, and H coverage can significantly affect the performance, especially for MoP. Additionally, certain doping can enhance the HER catalytic performance for Mo2C and MoP, while the improvements for Ni2P are less significant than expected.

Large-current-stable bifunctional nanoporous Fe-rich nitride electrocatalysts for highly efficient overall water and urea splitting

Fengming Cai et al.

Summary: The study introduces a bifunctional nanoporous Fe-rich nitride hybrid electrocatalyst with extraordinary catalytic activities for both oxygen evolution and urea oxidation reactions, showing impressive long-term durability at large current densities. By combining this catalyst with an efficient NiMoO4-H-2 catalyst for hydrogen evolution, the researchers achieved commercially viable current densities for overall water and urea electrolysis with outstanding long-term durability, surpassing most reported electrolyzers. This work presents a novel approach to develop multifunctional electrocatalysts using earth-abundant elements for energy-efficient hydrogen production and pollution treatment in urea-rich wastewater.
