Engineering dual metal single-atom sites with the nitrogen-coordinated nonprecious catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic electrolyte

Hussein Gharibi et al.

Summary: In this study, an electrocatalyst composed of dual metal single-atom sites attached to nitrogen-doped porous carbon was developed using a host-guest design. Co-Fe SAs/NC showed remarkable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performances compared to other samples, with higher onset potential and limiting current density values, and greater stability in durability measurements. This suggests that Co-Fe SAs/NC could be a promising ORR catalyst for use in fuel cells to improve ORR kinetics and durability.

Nanosized Rh grown on single-walled carbon nanohorns for efficient methanol oxidation reaction

Xiang-Jie Guo et al.

Summary: Reasonable design and controllable synthesis of non-Pt catalysts with high methanol oxidation activity are important for large-scale commercial applications of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). In this study, nanosized Rh grown on single-walled carbon nanohorns (Rh/SWCNH) have been successfully fabricated as anode catalysts for DMFCs. The resulting Rh/SWCNH catalysts exhibit exceptional electrocatalytic properties and hold great potential as alternatives for commercial Pt/carbon black and Pd/carbon black catalysts.

Structurally ordered PtFe intermetallic nanocatalysts toward efficient electrocatalysis of methanol oxidation

Yao Nie et al.

Summary: By using thermal interdiffusions under a removable NaCl cover, pure Pt nanoparticles can be easily converted into size-controlled PtFe ordered intermetallic nanoparticles, while disordered nanoparticles can be obtained by adjusting the feeding contents of Fe precursors. The ordered PtFe catalyst shows higher activity, stability and anti-CO poisoning capability compared to disordered PtFe and commercial Pt/C, due to the stronger strain, ligand, and synergistic effect between Pt and Fe.
