Direct Partial Oxidation of Methane Catalyzed by an In Situ Generated Active Au(III) Complex at Low Temperature in Ionic Liquids

Tingyu Huang et al.

Summary: An in situ generated Au-III catalyst is found to efficiently catalyze the oxidation of CH4 to C1 oxygenates in the presence of [Eim][NTf2] as the solvent and H2O2 as the oxidant, with CH3OH as the primary product. The Au-III catalyst forms a resting state of Au-III-CH4H-bonding structure under high CH4 pressure, which is regenerated by oxidation of Au-I by H2O2 after each catalytic turnover. Overoxidation of CH3OH to HCOOH is catalyzed by Au-0 species as a result of Au-I disproportionation, leading to catalyst deactivation. Increasing CH4 pressure and H2O2 concentration enhances catalyst lifetime and improves CH4 oxidation efficiency with an improved CH3OH/HCOOH ratio.

One-Step Conversion of Crab Shells to Levulinic Acid Catalyzed by Ionic Liquids: Self-Healing of Chitin Fraction

Qingyang Zhao et al.

Summary: A highly selective route for producing levulinic acid (LA) from raw crab shells in one step has been achieved through the catalysis of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-methyl-3-(3-sulfopropyl)-imidazolium hydrogen sulfate. The relationship between the structure of ILs and the yield of LA was investigated, revealing the crucial role of both the acidity and hydrogen-bonding ability of ILs in dictating their catalytic activity. Additionally, a self-healing phenomenon driven by hydrogen-bond interactions was discovered in the chitin fraction, indicating a potential for direct depolymerization and deacetylation/depolymerization processes.
