All-dielectric orthogonal doublet cylindrical metalens in long-wave infrared regions

Xiaoyan Shi et al.

Summary: Metalens have been introduced to address the drawbacks of traditional lenses and optical systems, such as large volume and complicated assembly. A converging cylindrical metalens (CML) and an orthogonal doublet cylindrical metalens (ODCM) were designed and demonstrated for focusing effect. The performance of ODCM is comparable to that of a traditional circular metalens within a certain size range.

Hybrid metasurfaces for simultaneous focusing and filtering

Mansoor A. Sultan et al.

Summary: This work presents the design and fabrication of polymeric, structural optical filters that simultaneously focus light, representing a novel design at the boundary between diffractive optics and metasurfaces. Filters for visible and near-infrared wavelengths were designed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. Prototype filters fabricated using two-photon lithography show excellent agreement between experimental measurements and simulations.

Extreme-Angle Silicon Infrared Optics Enabled by Streamlined Surfaces

Fei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel infrared optical system design based on catenary optics and isophase streamline optimization was proposed, leading to high-efficiency, wide-angle, and broadband performance. The breakthrough technology achieved near 100% diffraction efficiency in ultrawide spectral and angular ranges, enabling wide-angle diffraction-limited imaging and laser beam steering with a field of view up to 178 degrees. This methodology is scalable to the entire optical band and various materials, offering compact infrared systems for surveillance, unmanned vehicles, medical science, and more.

Reconfigurable all-dielectric metalens with diffraction-limited performance

Mikhail Y. Shalaginov et al.

Summary: This study introduces an active metasurface platform with all-dielectric, low-loss architecture for phase tuning in the full 2 range and diffraction-limited performance. A new design principle enables binary switching between arbitrary phase profiles for metasurfaces, along with a figure-of-merit tailored for reconfigurable meta-optics. The high-performance varifocal metalens with a record large switching contrast ratio and aberration-free, multi-depth imaging represents a key experimental demonstration of non-mechanical tunable metalens with diffraction-limited performance.

Rotationally tunable varifocal 3D metalens

Fatih Balli et al.

Summary: Varifocal optics have various applications in imaging systems. In this work, a 3D doublet metalens with a tunable focal length is designed and fabricated, allowing for phase control of light through mutual rotation of singlet structures to produce different wavefronts converting input plane waves into spherical wavefronts whose focal length depends on rotation. The design holds promise for applications such as zoom lenses, microscopy, and augmented reality.

Long wavelength infrared imaging under ambient thermal radiation via an all-silicon metalens

Luocheng Huang et al.

Summary: Traditional bulky refractive optics are a barrier to further miniaturization of imaging systems, while meta-optics have attracted great interest as a replacement for refractive optics in the visible wavelength range. This study extends meta-optics to the long-wave infrared regime and demonstrates imaging under ambient thermal emission, showing that the chromatic nature of the metalenses does not affect ambient light imaging.

Summary: The research team designed and fabricated ultra-broadband achromatic metalenses operating from visible into shortwave infrared wavelengths. The hybrid 3D architecture allowed realization in low refractive index materials, with prototyping done using two-photon lithography and mass production using molding. The experimental results showed excellent performance of the metalenses, demonstrating the feasibility of using low-refractive index materials and two-photon lithography for metalenses operating at visible wavelengths.
