Geochemistry of natural acid rock drainage in the Mt Evans area, Anaconda-Pintler Range, Montana, USA

C. H. Gammons et al.

Summary: This study investigated natural acid rock drainage in two streams near Mt Evans, Montana, and found elevated levels of dissolved sulfate, aluminum, trace metals, and rare earth elements in the streams. The geochemistry of the site suggests the possible presence of a metamorphosed sedimentary-exhalative deposit, with a fast rate of sulfide oxidation possibly due to exposure of fresh bedrock in the area. Drilling to test this possibility is unlikely due to the site's proximity to a federal wilderness area.

Identification and Prioritisation of Mine Pollution Sources in a Temperate Watershed Using Tracer Injection and Synoptic Sampling

Patrick Byrne et al.

Summary: Identifying mine pollution sources in wet temperate watersheds is complex due to precipitation variability. Remediation of point sources in the upper watershed and capping of tailings in the lower watershed can significantly reduce stream metal concentrations. Models of mine pollution dynamics are crucial for prioritising remediation efforts and quantifying the impact of diffuse pollution sources under changing precipitation patterns.

Geochemistry of natural acid rock drainage in the Judith Mountains, Montana, part 2: Seasonal and spatial trends in Chicago Gulch

Christopher H. Gammons et al.

Summary: The study investigated the geochemical characteristics of Chicago Gulch, one of the three radiating watersheds on Red Mountain in central Montana. Results showed acidic headwaters and rising pH downstream, as well as metal ion and solute loads distribution. Metal pollution in water samples exceeded environmental standards, with particularly high lead concentrations in the headwaters indicating a possible unmined lead-sulfide deposit.
