Numerical and theoretical analysis of fast evaporating sessile droplets with coupled fields

Yang Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation were conducted to investigate the evaporation of droplets with coupled flow, heat, and vapor transfer fields. The findings show that droplet evaporation can be deteriorated by evaporative cooling effect, while enhanced by internal thermocapillary convection flow and external natural convection. Additionally, a correction factor was proposed to quantify the deviation of actual evaporation rates from those predicted by the isothermal model.

Interferometric measurement of co-operative evaporation in 2D droplet arrays

Andrew M. J. Edwards et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new interferometric technique for precise measurements of droplet evaporation rates, revealing that the evaporation rate is highly dependent on the position of the droplet within the array and its confinement. The results are in good quantitative agreement with a recent analytical model of cooperative evaporation rates.

Spreading and retraction dynamics of sessile evaporating droplets comprising volatile binary mixtures

A. G. L. Williams et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of thin volatile droplets consisting of binary mixtures on a heated substrate. The developed model accurately predicts spreading and retraction of the droplets, with experiments confirming the preferential evaporation of more volatile components driving superspreading in some cases.

Evaporation of a thin droplet in a shallow well: theory and experiment

Hannah-May D'ambrosio et al.

Summary: Motivated by industrial production of organic light-emitting-diode displays, this study formulates and analyzes a mathematical model for the evolution of a thin droplet in a shallow axisymmetric well, taking into account spatially non-uniform evaporation of the fluid. Physical experiments were conducted with cylindrical wells of varying aspect ratios to validate the mathematical model by comparing experimental results with theoretical predictions.

Evaporation of multiple droplets

Hassan Masoud et al.

Summary: The study provides an accurate estimate for the diffusive evaporation rates of multiple droplets on a horizontal substrate, based on a combination of Green's second identity and the method of reflections. The theoretical results can be used as guidance for future studies on collective evaporation of droplets and similar diffusion-dominated transport problems.

Deposition pattern of drying droplets

Xiuyuan Yang et al.

Summary: The drying of liquid droplets with nonvolatile solutes induces rich deposition patterns on the substrate, which has important ramifications for technical applications. This review focuses on the development of physical understanding of tailoring specific ring-like deposition patterns of drying droplets, with particular attention to the application of Onsager variational principle (OVP) theory. Recent progress in OVP theory has made it a promising tool for predicting deposition patterns of drying droplets.

Dynamics of hygroscopic aqueous solution droplets undergoing evaporation or vapour absorption

Zhenying Wang et al.

Summary: Studies on the evaporation of multicomponent droplets have revealed complex physical mechanisms such as density-driven flows, phase separation, transient Marangoni flow, and solutal effects. By adding hygroscopic salts, the adhesive properties and direction of water vapor mass flux of the droplet can be controlled. The dynamics of hygroscopic aqueous solution droplets are analyzed, showing competition between capillary, thermal Marangoni, and solutal Marangoni mechanisms during evaporation or vapor absorption.

Hydrothermal waves in sessile droplets evaporating at a constant contact angle mode

Ji-Long Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the possibility of hydrothermal waves (HTWs) in droplets with moderate contact angles through numerical simulation, predicting fan-like HTWs with three blades in the droplet. The behavior of fluid flow inside the droplet and its oscillatory characteristics were carefully analyzed, and experimental verification confirmed that HTWs occur only under moderate contact angles. The effects of substrate temperature, initial radius, and contact angle on the critical radius and corresponding critical normal Marangoni number for the disappearance of HTWs were also studied.

The nascent coffee ring: how solute diffusion counters advection

M. R. Moore et al.

Summary: The study investigated the initial evolution of the coffee ring formed by the evaporation of a thin droplet containing a dilute solute, showing that diffusion near the droplet contact line plays a key role in controlling the coffee-ring structure. Two evaporation models were analyzed, highlighting the limitations of the assumptions when the solute becomes less dilute and the effects of finite particle size and jamming. The results illustrated the limited validity of the models in the diffusive evaporative flux regime.

Substrate concavity influenced evaporation mechanisms of sessile droplets

Arnov Paul et al.

Summary: This article investigates the evaporation kinetics of sessile droplets on curved surfaces, showing that evaporation rates are higher on superhydrophobic surfaces compared to hydrophilic surfaces. By studying the internal flow field and the influence of substrate curvature, a mathematical model is proposed to explain the mechanisms behind these variations. The model predictions align well with experimental observations, confirming the enhanced evaporation rate on curved superhydrophobic surfaces.

Contact-line deposits from multiple evaporating droplets

Alexander W. Wray et al.

Summary: Building on recent theoretical work, this study provides predictions for the nonuniform densities of contact-line deposits left on a substrate after multiple droplets containing suspended solid particles have completely evaporated. Experimental results demonstrate that the deposits are reduced where droplets are closest together, in quantitative agreement with the theoretical predictions. Predictions for a triplet of droplets arranged in an equilateral triangle show a more subtle effect of shielding on the deposit.

Patterns from drops drying on inclined substrates

P. Logesh Kumar et al.

Summary: The coffee ring effect is a result of particles migrating and depositing at the three-phase contact line during the drying of particle-laden drops. This spatial distribution of particles shows azimuthal symmetry, which can be disrupted by manipulating the inclination of the substrate using gravity. The degree of asymmetry in particle deposition is influenced by particle size, substrate wettability, and the inclination angle of the substrate, indicating the presence of additional particle transport mechanisms during drying.

The Lifetimes of Evaporating Sessile Droplets of Water Can Be Strongly Influenced by Thermal Effects

Feargus G. H. Schofield et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the effect of the thermal properties of the system on the lifetime of an evaporating sessile droplet of water, showing that thermal effects can strongly influence the lifetimes of water droplets. Droplets with larger initial contact angles or on less conductive substrates generally have longer lifetimes than those with smaller initial contact angles or on more conductive substrates.
