Transition to Turbulence in Pipe Flow

Marc Avila et al.

Summary: Since Reynolds' seminal studies in the nineteenth century, pipe flow has been a primary prototype for studying the transition to turbulence in wall-bounded flows. Despite its apparent simplicity, researchers have been studying various aspects of this problem for over a century. This review provides insights from three different perspectives: stability and susceptibility of laminar flow, phase transition and spatiotemporal dynamics, and dynamical systems analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations. The review highlights how these perspectives have contributed to a profound understanding of the onset of turbulence in pipe flow, as well as discussing open points, applications to complex fluid flows, and similarities with other wall-bounded flows.

Generation of streamwise helical vortex loops via successive reconnections in early pipe transition

Shanxin Ruan et al.

Summary: This study applies the Lagrangian-based structure identification method to investigate vortex reconnection in temporally evolving transitional pipe flows. By calculating the evolution using the two-time method, the vortex reconnection process is effectively identified.

Exact Coherent States and the Nonlinear Dynamics of Wall-Bounded Turbulent Flows

Michael D. Graham et al.

Summary: Wall-bounded turbulence exhibits persistent patterns called coherent structures, which are important for transport processes. Recent research has focused on exact coherent states (ECS) in wall-bounded parallel flows, which are non-turbulent, nonlinear solutions resembling coherent structures in turbulence.

Experimental measurements in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow: dynamics of the large- and small-scale flow

L. Klotz et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally investigates the transitional range of Reynolds numbers in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow and focuses on the localized turbulent structures and large-scale flow generated around them. The study shows how the amplitude of large-scale flow depends on Reynolds number and amplitude perturbation, and characterizes the initial dynamics of the turbulent spot and its interaction with the large-scale flow. Additionally, the paper provides the first experimental measurements of the large-scale flow around an oblique turbulent band.

An energy-efficient pathway to turbulent drag reduction

Ivan Marusic et al.

Summary: Skin-friction drag can be decreased by oscillatory motion in the surface at high Reynolds numbers, with two distinct pathways for drag reduction identified: one involving frequencies comparable to small-scale eddies and the other involving frequencies comparable to large-scale eddies. The second pathway offers more efficient drag reduction at higher Reynolds numbers, presenting new opportunities for reducing fuel consumption and increasing power generation.

Early development of artificially initiated turbulent spots

Y. X. Wang et al.

Summary: The experimental investigation in a low-turbulence wind tunnel revealed that artificially initiated turbulent spots in a laminar boundary layer over a flat plate quickly developed into hairpin-like structures, increasing in width, length and height downstream. Only disturbances greater than a threshold value evolved into turbulent spots, while others decayed. The rate of development was also influenced by the duration of initial disturbances. Additionally, the behavior of turbulence generation within a turbulent spot was found to be similar to burst events in a turbulent boundary layer.

Interaction of a turbulent spot with a two-dimensional cavity

S. Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of a two-dimensional surface cavity on the structure and growth rate of a turbulent spot through experimental and numerical analysis. The interactions between the turbulent spot and its wake with the Kelvin-Helmholtz rollers of the cavity shear layer lead to significant increases in both lateral and streamwise growth rates. The underlying physics of these developments have been identified.
