Evaluating the impact of MR image harmonization on thalamus deep network segmentation

Muhan Shao et al.

Summary: Medical image segmentation is a key task in medical image analysis, particularly in the segmentation of brain magnetic resonance images (MRIs). Existing segmentation algorithms face challenges due to contrast variation between training and testing data. This paper introduces an image-to-image translation technique called MR image harmonization to address this issue and presents a 3D U-Net algorithm for thalamus segmentation. The study shows that image harmonization maintains anatomical features and improves segmentation performance, making it feasible to process large amounts of data from different sites.

Subclinical anterior optic pathway involvement in early multiple sclerosis and clinically isolated syndromes

Marco Pisa et al.

Summary: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is increasingly important in evaluating patients with multiple sclerosis, showing neuro-retinal changes indicative of inflammatory and disease burden. Subclinical optic nerve involvement and thinning of ganglion cell layer in eyes without acute optic neuritis are associated with greater disease burden, reflecting early disease phases.

Summary: The study identified the retinal ganglion cell types projecting to the medial subdivision of inferior pulvinar and superior colliculus in marmoset monkeys. Results showed that both PIm and SC receive input from various ganglion cell types, with different dominant cell types in each area.

Accurate Estimation of Total Intracranial Volume in MRI using a Multi-tasked Image-to-Image Translation Network

Mallika Singh et al.

Summary: Total intracranial volume (TIV) is the volume enclosed inside the cranium, used for evaluating neurodegenerative diseases. This study proposes a method to automatically generate TIV masks and obtain ground truth TIV masks using a semi-manual approach, saving time. The research utilizes conditional generative adversarial networks to synthesize CT images and generate TIV masks, with quantitative evaluation showing that the model can closely approximate the reference images.
