Prediction of local fixed charge density loss in cartilage following ACL injury and reconstruction: A computational proof-of-concept study with MRI follow-up

Gustavo A. Orozco et al.

Summary: This proof-of-concept study developed three-dimensional patient-specific mechanobiological knee joint models to simulate alterations in fixed charged density (FCD) near cartilage lesions during the walking gait. The study suggests mechanisms through which a local FCD loss might occur near cartilage lesions, potentially due to excessive fluid velocity and strain.

Comparison of material models for anterior cruciate ligament in tension: from poroelastic to a novel fibril-reinforced nonlinear composite model

A. Ristaniemi et al.

Summary: Computational models of the knee joint are sensitive to the material model and properties chosen for ligaments. This study aimed to develop a model accurately reproducing experimentally measured stress-relaxation data of bovine anterior cruciate ligament. Results show that a poroelastic model with a nonlinear two-relaxation-time strain-recruited viscoelastic fibrillar network best captures the complex stress-relaxation behavior.

Structural Consequences of a Partial Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury on Remaining Joint Integrity: Evidence for Ligament and Bone Changes Over Time in an Ovine Model

Kristen I. Barton et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate histological alterations to the remaining intact intra-articular ligaments, synovium, and infrapatellar fat pad after AM band Tx, as well as to quantify subchondral bone changes at 20 and 40 weeks. The results showed that ACL Tx influences the integrity of the remaining intact intra-articular ligaments and bone microarchitecture.

Early changes in osteochondral tissues in a rabbit model of post-traumatic osteoarthritis

Lingwei Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate changes in subchondral bone and articular cartilage following ACLT in a rabbit model. Results showed that ACLT induced progressive subchondral bone loss, with gradual proteoglycan recovery indicated by FCD results. Overall, early changes were observed in bone and cartilage, with more significant bone loss at 8 weeks post-ACLT.

Structure, composition and fibril-reinforced poroviscoelastic properties of bovine knee ligaments and patellar tendon

Aapo Ristaniemi et al.

Summary: By studying the tissue-level stress-relaxation characteristics of ligaments and tendons in the toe region, characteristic times and magnitudes of fast and long-term relaxations can be described, aiding in understanding their functions and adaptations in health and disease. It was found that high hydroxyproline content affects the magnitude and time of relaxation, high uronic acid content influences the time of long-term relaxation, and a high crimp angle impacts the magnitude of long-term relaxation.
