Extended reality anatomy undergraduate teaching: A literature review on an alternative method of learning

Lucy Taylor et al.

Summary: The study found that augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have high rates of satisfaction and acceptability as supplementary teaching aids for undergraduate students in anatomy education. AR was found to be more effective than VR, but VR is more expensive. Larger and long-term studies are needed to evaluate the true effectiveness and clinical relevance of these technologies.

Does an Audiovisual Dissection Manual Improve Medical Students' Learning in the Gross Anatomy Dissection Course?

Christian F. A. Koop et al.

Summary: The study examined the effects of a locally produced audiovisual dissection manual on medical students' performance, knowledge gained, motivation, emotions, learning behavior, and learning efficiency. The results did not show significant positive effects of the audiovisual manual on these parameters, indicating that further implementation of this type of e-learning resource into the curriculum is not supported. This study can guide future evaluation and design of e-learning resources for the gross anatomy dissection course.

Anatomy education of medical and dental students during COVID-19 pandemic: a reality check

Anjali Singal et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the majority of students missed traditional anatomy education, such as dissection courses, face-to-face lectures, and interaction with mentors. Students strongly felt the lack of confidence in topics completed without physical resources, as well as the lack of proper equipment and strong internet connections hindering their digital learning. Additionally, lack of self-motivation was a common issue among students.

Musculoskeletal anatomy: evaluation and comparison of common teaching and learning modalities

Aristeidis Zibis et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of four common teaching modalities in anatomy education and investigated students' perceptions on each modality. The traditional dissection and modern 3D software showed better performance in knowledge acquisition, while prosections and plastic models were less effective. Dissection remained students' top choice, while 3D software was considered more useful for preparing for clinical activities.
