Identification, Quantification, and Imaging of the Biodistribution of Soot Particles by Mass Spectral Fingerprinting

Yue Lin et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new method for label-free identification, quantification, and imaging of soot particles in complex media, based on laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry fingerprinting. The method showed consistent mass spectral fingerprints for soot particles from different sources and morphologies, enabling accurate quantification and imaging of soot particles.

Photochemical Transformation and Catalytic Activity of Dissolved Black Nitrogen Released from Environmental Black Carbon

Fei Lian et al.

Summary: This study examined the photochemical transformation and catalytic activity of dissolved black nitrogen (DBN) in soils, finding that DBN is more easily transformed and generates more reactive oxygen and nitrogen species under solar irradiation, leading to higher photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds compared to dissolved black carbon (BC). These findings provide new insights into the impact of heteroatoms on the phototransformation and activity of BC as well as the cycling of nitrogen in terrestrial systems.

Particle-Phase Photoreactions of HULIS and TMIs Establish a Strong Source of H2O2 and Particulate Sulfate in the Winter North China Plain

Can Ye et al.

Summary: During haze periods in the North China Plain, high NO concentrations block the classical gas-phase H2O2 formation, but surprisingly, H2O2 mixing ratios of about 1 ppbv were observed repeatedly in winter 2017. Field observations and chamber experiments suggest a photochemical in-particle formation of H2O2 driven by transition metal ions and humic-like substances.
