Femtoliter-Droplet Mass Spectrometry Interface Utilizing Nanofluidics for Ultrasmall and High-Sensitivity Analysis

Yuto Takagi et al.

Summary: This study developed a mass spectrometry (MS) interface utilizing nanofluidics to achieve high-sensitivity detection. By converting liquid samples into fL droplets through a nanofluidic device and controlling their trajectory, the droplets were injected into a mass spectrometer with 100% efficiency. A heat transfer module was also utilized to vaporize the droplets into gas-phase ions. Compared to a conventional MS interface, this interface achieved 290-fold higher detection limit for caffeine ions, resulting in 2 orders of magnitude higher sensitivity.

Shift of charge inversion point of a trivalent ion solution in a nanofluidic channel

Kyojiro Morikawa et al.

Summary: Understanding the surface and liquid properties in extended nanospaces is crucial for future device engineering. In this study, trivalent ions were used to investigate the charge inversion phenomenon in extended nanospaces. The results show that different trivalent ions exhibit different adsorption properties in extended nanospaces, providing a new finding for understanding the liquid properties in nanospaces.

Integration of sequential analytical processes into sub-100 nm channels: volumetric sampling, chromatographic separation, and label-free molecule detection

Yoshiyuki Tsuyama et al.

Summary: This research presents the establishment of a label-free molecule detection method for sub-100 nm nanochannels and demonstrates sequential analytical processes using integrated nanofluidic devices. The absorption-based detection method, photothermal optical diffraction (POD), achieves a limit of detection of 1.8 μM in 70 nm nanochannels and enables aL-fL volumetric sampling using cross-shaped nanochannels. The combination of POD and volumetric sampling with nanochannel chromatography allows for separation analysis in sub-100 nm channels.
