Analysis of hydrophilic per- and polyfluorinated sulfonates including trifluoromethanesulfonate using solid phase extraction and mixed-mode liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Xi-Zhi Niu et al.

Summary: Ultra-hydrophilic perand polyfluorinated sulfonates (PFSA) are a topic of increasing concern due to their widespread presence, persistence, and mobility in water environments. This study developed a method for analyzing trifluoromethanesulfonate, perfluorobutanesulfonate, 10-camphorsulfonate, and a di-fluorinated sulfonate using mixed-mode liquid chromatography. The method successfully retained and separated all target analytes, and solid phase extraction was used for sample purification. The method allows for simultaneous analysis of the most hydrophilic PFAS chemical, trifluoromethanesulfonate, and moderately hydrophobic PFSAs. The optimized method has low instrumental limits of quantification and high recovery rates.

Concentration profiles of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in major sources to the environment

Kavitha Dasu et al.

Summary: The review of literature on PFAS concentrations and composition from different sources showed that direct and indirect sources have varying levels of PFAS contamination. Groundwater, landfill leachates, and aqueous film-forming foam were identified as major sources of high concentrations of PFAS.

Ann-Kristin Rausch et al.

Summary: The study developed a two-dimensional high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method for analyzing multiple food contaminants and residues in cereals, including various mycotoxins and pesticides. Validation results showed good linearity, recovery rates, and stability for most analytes, but some analysis results were unsatisfactory for certain substances.

Systematic Evaluation of Liquid Chromatography (LC) Column Combinations for Application in Two-Dimensional LC Metabolomic Studies

Maria Gruebner et al.

Summary: Compared to proteomics, the use of two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D LC) in metabolomics is still in its early stages. The study aimed to identify successful stationary phase combinations and optimized parameters to determine orthogonality. Through the analysis of 15 artificial 2D data sets, the study identified the most effective column combinations for metabolomics. The implementation of these column combinations in an offline 2D LC time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis of a lyophilized urine sample resulted in the detection of 164 metabolites, showcasing the comprehensive coverage of the 2D retention space.

Suspect screening workflow comparison for the analysis of organic xenobiotics in environmental water samples

B. Gonzalez-Gaya et al.

Summary: Suspect screening techniques can determine a wider range of compounds than traditional target analysis, but the performance relies on peak annotation procedures. A study compared four workflows using different suspect lists, revealing that while differences were observed at lower confidence levels, only 4 features were annotated differently among the workflows. The approach based on the mzCloud library provided satisfactory results with a simpler method for analyzing organic xenobiotics in environmental water samples.
