Conservation and Convergence of Genetic Architecture in the Adaptive Radiation of Anolis Lizards

Joel W. McGlothlin et al.

Summary: The study examines the genetic architecture of Anolis lizards and whether it shows convergence in response to repeated evolution of habitat specialists. The results indicate that while the overall structure of the genetic architecture remains conserved, certain aspects of it have converged due to selection pressures, particularly related to limb length.

High and rising economic costs of biological invasions worldwide

Christophe Diagne et al.

Summary: Biological invasions have led to significant impacts on global economy and biodiversity, with costs showing a rapid increase over time. The study reveals that the damage costs of biological invasions are significantly higher than management expenditures, highlighting the need for further improvement in research methods.

Liftoff: accurate mapping of gene annotations

Alaina Shumate et al.

Summary: Advancements in DNA sequencing and computational methods have led to a significant increase in high-quality genome assemblies for many species. To annotate gene features in these genomes, a common strategy is to map genes from a previously annotated reference genome to new or improved assemblies. The tool Liftoff can accurately map genes between the same or closely related species, ensuring high sequence identity and preserving gene structure.

Fitness maps to a large-effect locus in introduced stickleback populations

Dolph Schluter et al.

Summary: Most mutations for adaptation to new environments are small-effect, but large-effect beneficial variants can contribute significantly under certain conditions. A study on stickleback populations showed that an ancient freshwater allele near the Eda gene had a large fitness effect, leading to a significant increase in offspring survival and allele frequency in freshwater environments. The findings suggest strong selection on this gene (and/or linked genes) in freshwater habitats, which may increase the prevalence of large-effect fitness variants in adaptive evolution.

Changes in selection pressure can facilitate hybridization during biological invasion in a Cuban lizard

Dan G. Bock et al.

Summary: Our study showed that hybridization in invasive populations is influenced by changes in natural selection, with stable genetic structure over time suggesting limited gene flow among invasive populations. The persistence of hybrids in invasive populations is attributed to changes in natural selection during invasion. Additionally, a large-effect X chromosome locus associated with limb length variation plays a role in hybrid adaptation.

High and rising economic costs of biological invasions worldwide

Christophe Diagne et al.

Summary: The study reveals that biological invasions have caused significant economic losses, with costs estimated to be continuously increasing and in need of further research improvement. It calls for consistent management actions and international policy agreements to reduce the burden of invasive alien species.

An Experimental Analysis of Perch Diameter and Substrate Preferences of Anolis Lizards from Natural Forest and Urban Habitats

Jason J. Kolbe et al.

Summary: Anolis lizards have preferences for larger diameter perches and wood substrates, with urban populations showing a stronger preference for wood substrates. Rapid environmental change caused by humans can decouple the relationship between habitat preferences and fitness, highlighting the importance of testing for changing preferences in organisms experiencing urbanization and other forms of global change.
