Linking sporadic hospital clusters during a community surge of the severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) B.1.617.2 delta variant: The utility of whole-genome sequencing

Liang En Wee et al.

Summary: Despite rigorous surveillance and a highly vaccinated healthcare worker population, sporadic clusters of healthcare-associated COVID-19 occurred during a community surge of the Delta variant. Genomic analysis played a critical role in timely cluster detection and identifying linkages among healthcare workers moving between clinical areas and sharing common lunch areas.

Environmental testing for SARS-CoV-2 in three tertiary-care hospitals during the peak of the third COVID-19 wave

Helena C. Maltezou et al.

Summary: During the peak of the third pandemic wave, real-time PCR testing of environmental samples from three hospitals showed a 4.1% contamination rate of SARS-CoV-2. Positive samples were mostly found in the emergency departments and intensive care units of the COVID-19 hospital, belonging predominantly to the highly transmissible B.1.1.7 cluster. Reinforcement of disinfection measures in high-risk patient areas is recommended during periods of widespread circulation of highly transmissible variants.

Summary: This study reviewed a cluster of nosocomially acquired COVID-19 cases, emphasizing the importance of isolation procedures for preventing infection among patients and staff. Findings from environmental and contact investigations revealed serious gaps in infection control practices that led to virus spread and cross infection among staff members.

Evelyn Patricia Sanchez Espinoza et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the presence of SARS-CoV-2 on the surface of mobile phones of healthcare workers in a hospital setting. While most HCWs increased adherence to hand hygiene and phone disinfection during the pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 RNA was still detected on some phones, highlighting the need for universal infection control guidelines for electronic devices in hospitals.
