Galectin-3 in Kidney Diseases: From an Old Protein to a New Therapeutic Target

Louis Boutin et al.

Summary: Gal-3 is a lectin associated with multiple pathophysiology pathways in renal damage and fibrosis. It plays various roles, including signal transduction, cell adhesion, and immunological chemoattractant protein. Clinical studies and animal models have linked Gal-3 to kidney disease, and Gal-3 inhibitors appear to improve renal disease. This review summarizes the latest literature on Gal-3 in renal pathophysiology, from its role as a biomarker to its potential as a therapeutic agent.

Urinary Galectin-3 as a Novel Biomarker for the Prediction of Renal Fibrosis and Kidney Disease Progression

Shuo-Ming Ou et al.

Summary: Plasma galectin-3 is associated with organ fibrosis, and this study explored the potential of urinary galectin-3 as a biomarker for kidney disease progression. Patients with higher urinary galectin-3 levels had lower eGFRs and higher proteinuria levels. Higher levels of urinary galectin-3 were also associated with more severe renal fibrosis. The study suggests that urinary galectin-3 levels may be useful for identifying patients at high risk of kidney disease progression and renal fibrosis.

Estimating the prevalence of definitive chronic kidney disease in the Japanese general population

Kei Nagai et al.

Summary: In the main cohort, the prevalence of definitive CKD among men aged 40 to 74 was 2.3-23.0% and among women was 1.7-17.1%. The estimated prevalence of reduced eGFR and/or proteinuria in the baseline year alone was 15.7% in men and 13.6% in women; the prevalence of definitive CKD was 10.9% in men and 9.2% in women. The number of CKD cases based on a single-year test in Japanese adults over 20 years of age increased from 13.3 million to 14.8 million between 2005 and 2015.

Plasma Mucin-1 (CA15-3) Levels in Autosomal Dominant Tubulointerstitial Kidney Disease due to MUC1 Mutations

Petr Vylet'al et al.

Summary: Plasma CA15-3 levels in ADTKD-MUC1 patients are approximately 40% lower than in healthy individuals, with significant overlap between the groups. Segregation by the rs4072037 genotype did not significantly improve differentiation. Gender and estimated glomerular filtration rate minimally affected CA15-3 levels.

Mesenchymal stem cells ameliorate renal fibrosis by galectin-3/Akt/GSK3β/Snail signaling pathway in adenine-induced nephropathy rat

Huajun Tang et al.

Summary: The study showed that MSCs treatment can decrease the expression of fibrosis-related markers through the Galactin-3/Akt/GSK3beta/Snail signaling pathway. The downregulation of Galactin-3 may be a valuable target for treating renal fibrosis.
