Biomarkers for predicting nucleos(t)ide analogs discontinuation and hepatitis B virus recurrence after drug withdrawal in chronic hepatitis B patients

Mengqi Luo et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the role of HBV-related biomarkers in predicting the discontinuation of nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) and the recurrence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients, providing references for clinical medication. The results show that HBV DNA, HBV RNA, pgRNA, HBcrAg, anti-HBc, as well as prediction models containing multiple biomarkers, can predict the safe discontinuation of NAs before HBsAg loss and recurrence.

Clinical management of chronic hepatitis B: A concise overview

Arno Furquim d'Almeida et al.

Summary: Chronic hepatitis B affects over 250 million people globally with increased risks of liver-related complications, yet many remain asymptomatic. NA therapy has shown excellent clinical outcomes, but the need for reliable biomarkers to identify patients suitable for treatment withdrawal is urgent. Renewed approaches to screening and linkage to care are essential for optimizing clinical management of chronic hepatitis B.

Review article: Novel biomarkers in hepatitis B infection

James Lok et al.

Summary: Chronic hepatitis B is a global health problem with difficulties in accurately predicting complications. Recently, novel viral biomarkers have shown promise in predicting treatment outcomes, stratifying risk, and estimating viral reactivation. However, studies have been mainly conducted in specific populations, and standardization of detection methods is lacking.

Hepatic Decompensation in Cirrhotic Patients Receiving Antiviral Therapy for Chronic Hepatitis B

Hye Won Lee et al.

Summary: This study reported the incidence and predictors of hepatic decompensation among cirrhotic patients receiving antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis B. The results showed that hepatic decompensation is uncommon but not eliminated, with factors such as baseline liver stiffness measurement, diabetes, and blood indicators being associated with decompensation.

Recent advances in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease metabolomics

Hwi Young Kim

Summary: The clinical spectrum of NAFLD ranges from simple steatosis to NASH, with liver biopsy being the standard for diagnosis. Metabolomics has emerged as a promising diagnostic method to uncover metabolic alterations relevant to NASH progression, with recent research efforts focusing on lipidomics, amino acids, and bile acid metabolomics to discover potential biomarkers.

Persistence of intrahepatic hepatitis B virus DNA integration in patients developing hepatocellular carcinoma after hepatitis B surface antigen seroclearance

Jeong Won Jang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that HBV integration contributes to HCC development in some CHB patients, particularly after HBsAg seroclearance. HBV integration sites were more enriched within genic areas in tumors, while intergenic integrations were more common in non-tumor tissues. HBV integration plays an important role in carcinogenesis.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Jer-Wei Wu et al.

Summary: HBcrAg, as a marker of HBV replication, is associated with HCC risk in treatment-naive patients, but its value in treated patients needs further validation. The next challenge is to combine HBcrAg with other viral markers to construct a better HCC prediction model.

Outcomes after liver transplantation in Korea: Incidence and risk factors from Korean transplantation registry

Jong Man Kim et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the post-liver transplantation outcomes in the Korean population and identified death, graft loss, rejection, renal failure, new onset of diabetes, and hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence as common outcomes. The incidence of these outcomes was generally higher in DDLT recipients compared to LDLT recipients. Recipient age, DDLT, ABO incompatible transplant, and HCC beyond Milan criteria pre-transplant were identified as significant risk factors associated with the outcomes.

Summary: The transition from NAFLD to MAFLD involves including FLD subjects with metabolic abnormalities in the criteria while excluding those without, leading to a focus on metabolic dysfunction in the MAFLD criteria. This may underestimate the prognostic value of hepatic steatosis, but could better identify subjects at higher risk of liver or cardiovascular outcomes.
