Comparing costs and cost-efficiency of platforms for micronutrient powder (MNP) delivery to children in rural Uganda

Summary: The cost and cost-efficiency of distributing micronutrient powder (MNP) through community-based mechanisms and in health facilities in a primarily rural district in Uganda were calculated. The study found that the cost per child reached and adhering to protocol was lower in the community platform compared to the facility platform. While community-based MNP delivery costs were greater, they were more cost-efficient per child reached and adhering to protocol compared to facility-based delivery. However, total costs for untargeted MNP delivery under program settings are potentially prohibitive.

The coverage of the programme and the costs for nutritional counselling were key factors influencing the cost-effectiveness of DALY averted.
