Aus rice root architecture variation contributing to grain yield under drought suggests a key role of nodal root diameter class

Qiong Liao et al.

Summary: This study found a close relationship between grain yield and deep root growth in rice through field trials and greenhouse studies. When studying the component traits of deep root growth, it was discovered that the number of "large-diameter" nodal roots was positively correlated with deep root growth and showed the strongest genome-wide association with grain yield under drought conditions. Two candidate loci were identified that have distinct haplotype distributions and could contribute to rice improvement.

Two centuries of breeding has altered root system architecture of winter wheat

Rebecca K. McGrail et al.

Summary: Crop selection and breeding have significantly reduced plant genetic diversity. Modern breeding programs have unintentionally affected winter wheat root systems, leading to decreased root size and growth rates with increased year of release. The faster root growth of older cultivars may provide a breeding target for developing plants with improved stress response and crop resilience.

Spatial soil water and nutrient distribution affecting the water productivity of winter wheat

Shuoshuo Liang et al.

Summary: The spatial distribution of irrigation and nutrients in soil significantly affects crop growth and water productivity. Applying irrigation in deep soil layer can increase grain yield and water productivity under water deficit conditions, while locating nutrients in deep soil layer may decrease crop yield and water productivity.

Winter wheat root distribution with irrigation, planting methods, and nitrogen application

Fatemeh Mehrabi et al.

Summary: Soil water uptake is influenced by root growth and distribution. Limitations on root growth may decrease water and nutrient uptake, leading to slower plant growth. Different irrigation strategies, nitrogen application rates, and planting methods were found to have varying effects on winter wheat root growth. In-furrow planting and partial root-zone irrigation reduced root density compared to on-ridge planting and full irrigation, while nitrogen application increased root density. Higher root traits enhanced grain yield initially, but excessive values had a negative impact on yield.

Wheat root systems as a breeding target for climate resilience

Eric S. Ober et al.

Summary: Larger genetic gains in yield are needed to meet future demand, and improving root systems could enhance climate resilience. Understanding the genetic control of root initiation, growth, and development is crucial for breeders to navigate, but also offers opportunities for improvement. Focusing on root system architecture in wheat can help enhance crop improvement and food security.

Tillage and irrigation increase wheat root systems at deep soil layer and grain yields in lime concretion black soil

Jinfeng Wang et al.

Summary: The combination of subsoiling and irrigation at the jointing stage was found to significantly improve wheat yield and water use efficiency in lime concretion black soil. Both tillage and irrigation had significant impacts on root systems and yield components, with tillage showing a stronger effect. Different irrigation regimes influenced root growth and yield differently, with jointing stage irrigation showing the most favorable results.

Electrical capacitance estimates crop root traits best under dry conditions-a case study in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Huijie Gu et al.

Summary: The study found that under dry conditions, root capacitance (ECroot) was significantly reduced after root cutting, and that incorporating root tissue density and soil moisture into the prediction model can improve the accuracy of ECroot. In contrast, ECroot was less affected by root cutting under wet soil conditions, suggesting that it may not directly measure roots in these conditions.

Challenges to design-oriented breeding of root system architecture adapted to climate change

Yusaku Uga

Summary: Roots are crucial for plants to absorb water and nutrients from the soil, with root system architecture determining the extent of resource gathering. As global climate change intensifies, improving root structures to combat abiotic stresses is essential. Traditional breeding methods face limitations in selecting promising root system architectures, hence the need for new strategies.
