The effects of three different microplastics on enzyme activities and microbial communities in soil

Meiling Yi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of three microplastics on soil enzyme activities and microbial community structure, showing that different microplastics had varying effects on enzyme activities, fibrous PP had a more persistent impact on microbial activity, and membranous PE and fibrous PP increased the alpha diversity of soil microbiota.

The occurrence of microplastic in Mu Us Sand Land soils in northwest China: Different soil types, vegetation cover and restoration years

Ling Ding et al.

Summary: The investigation revealed a relatively high abundance of microplastics in Mu Us Sand Land soils, with the woodland area showing a higher concentration of microplastics in the size range of 0 to 0.50 mm. Different tree species exhibited variations in microplastic accumulation, and the abundance of microplastics decreased with increasing restoration years.

Hydrological Properties of a Clay Loam Soil as Affected by Biochar Application in a Pot Experiment

Angela Libutti et al.

Summary: Biochar can improve soil-water relations, increase plant-available water, and reduce soil water loss. The experiment demonstrated that the addition of biochar decreased bulk density, increased water retention, but decreased water infiltration rate in the soil.

Study on the Influence of Fertilizer Solution Concentration on Soil Water and Nitrogen Transport Characteristics Under Film Hole Irrigation

Lihua Liu et al.

Summary: Film hole irrigation is a new technique that can improve water conservation and increase soil temperature in agricultural production. This study revealed the effects of fertilizer solution concentration on soil water and nitrogen transport characteristics under muddy water film hole infiltration. The results showed that the fertilizer solution concentration significantly affected the infiltration volume, migration distances, and moisture distribution in the wetted body, with the cumulative infiltration volume following the Kostiakov infiltration model.

Effects of earthworm casts on water and salt movement in typical Loess Plateau soils under brackish water irrigation

Yanpei Li et al.

Summary: The application of earthworm casts can effectively reduce soil salinity and sodicity by decreasing the salt content in the upper soil layers under brackish water irrigation. Additionally, earthworm casts improve soil structure and properties, inhibiting soil infiltration and evaporation, with effects increasing at higher application rates.
