Strain Switching in van der Waals Heterostructures Triggered by a Spin-Crossover Metal-Organic Framework

Carla Boix-Constant et al.

Summary: Van der Waals heterostructures offer the possibility of engineering new materials with unique functionalities by assembling different materials in layered structures. In this study, a molecular building block capable of producing strain, known as spin-crossover, is introduced to expand the family of van der Waals heterostructures. The electronic and optical properties of 2D materials can be switched by the strain accompanying the spin transition in smart van der Waals heterostructures. These molecular/inorganic heterostructures have significant applications in the fields of straintronics and band engineering in low-dimensional materials.

Quasi-1D Electronic Transport in a 2D Magnetic Semiconductor

Fan Wu et al.

Summary: Investigation on electronic transport through exfoliated multilayers of CrSBr, a 2D semiconductor, revealed a pronounced anisotropy along the crystallographic directions. The observed phenomenology and the detection of a 1D van Hove singularity in energy-resolved photocurrent measurements suggest that CrSBr exhibits quasi-1D electronic transport properties, unlike conventional 2D doped semiconductors.

Layer-Dependent Interlayer Antiferromagnetic Spin Reorientation in Air-Stable Semiconductor CrSBr

Chen Ye et al.

Summary: In this study, we use magnetotransport characterization and first-principles calculations to reveal the layer-dependent interlayer antiferromagnetic spin reorientation in air-stable semiconductor CrSBr. We discover an odd-even layer effect of interlayer spin reorientation and identify the competitions among different factors. A layer-dependent magnetic phase diagram is also constructed.

Coupling between magnetic order and charge transport in a two-dimensional magnetic semiconductor

Evan J. Telford et al.

Summary: Tunable electron transport is demonstrated within the magnetic phase of the 2D semiconductor CrSBr, revealing a strong coupling between its magnetic order and charge transport. The magnetoresistance can be dynamically and reversibly tuned by varying the carrier concentration, providing a mechanism for controlling charge transport in 2D magnets.

Summary: This work presents an experimental realization of a spin-valve device made fully out of two-dimensional materials. The usage of graphene/CrSBr heterostructures allows the avoidance of conventional air-sensitive 3D magnetic contacts and provides long spin relaxation length. Spin Waves and Magnetic Exchange Hamiltonian in CrSBr

Allen Scheie et al.

Summary: An experimental study is conducted to determine the magnetic exchange Hamiltonian and bulk magnon spectrum of CrSBr, an air-stable 2D van der Waals semiconducting magnet. The study confirms the A-type antiferromagnetic order using single crystal neutron diffraction and measures magnon dispersions using inelastic neutron scattering. The fitted exchange Hamiltonian enables theoretical predictions, such as the presence of chiral magnon edge modes in a spin-orbit enhanced CrSBr heterostructure.

TB2J: A python package for computing magnetic interaction parameters

Xu He et al.

Summary: TB2J is a Python package for the automatic computation of magnetic interactions in magnetic crystals based on density functional calculations. It requires only one first-principles electronic structure calculation in the non-relativistic case, and can be directly used for adiabatic magnon band structure and spin dynamics calculations. Its main advantage lies in its minimal user input requirement and easy integration into high-throughput workflows.

Magnetic Order and Symmetry in the 2D Semiconductor CrSBr

Kihong Lee et al.

Summary: The discovery of ferromagnetic ordering in monolayers of CrSBr, as well as the antiferromagnetic coupling in multilayers, highlights the unique magnetic properties of this 2D material. The Neel temperature of CrSBr increases with decreasing layer number, setting it apart from other 2D magnets. These findings introduce CrSBr as an exciting 2D magnetic semiconductor with potential applications in magnetic-electronic coupling and toroidal moments.

Electrical and thermal generation of spin currents by magnetic bilayer graphene

Talieh S. Ghiasi et al.

Summary: The coupling of bilayer graphene with the 2D interlayer antiferromagnetic CrSBr enables the active generation of spin currents in graphene, benefiting ultracompact spintronic devices. The strong spin-charge coupling in graphene and the high sensitivity of spin transport to the adjacent antiferromagnet's magnetization allow for the read-out of a single magnetic sublattice.

Van Der Waals Heterostructures Based on Atomically-Thin Superconductors

Carla Boix-Constant et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates the integration of 2D materials between 2D superconductors in Van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs). The vertical vdWHs based on NbSe2/TaS2/NbSe2 stacks exhibit phase transitions such as 1T-TaS2 charge density wave and NbSe2 superconductivity. The study also shows an enhancement of vdWH resistance due to Andreev reflections in NbSe2 superconducting state.

Carla Boix-Constant et al.

Summary: Layered materials, such as 1T-TaS2, are excellent for studying the interplay between in-plane and out-of-plane entanglement in strongly correlated systems. Experimental findings supported by DFT+U calculations reveal dimensionality as a key factor in understanding quantum materials like 1T-TaS2. The presence of an energy gap in the few-layer limit highlights the possible experimental realization of low-dimensional quantum spin liquid states.

Triaxial magnetic anisotropy in the two-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductor CrSBr

Ke Yang et al.

Summary: The study using first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations investigates the electronic structure and magnetic properties of CrSBr in bulk and monolayer forms. Bulk CrSBr is found to be a magnetic semiconductor with a triaxial magnetic anisotropy, attributed to the joint effects of spin-orbit coupling and magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. The monolayer of CrSBr shows persistent intralayer ferromagnetic exchange and a stronger contribution of shape anisotropy to the magnetic anisotropy. Monte Carlo simulations predict a Curie temperature of 175 K for the CrSBr monolayer, with the potential for further increasing the temperature by applying a uniaxial tensile or compressive strain along specific axes.
