Green economy and waste management: An inevitable plan for materials science

Suman Nandy et al.

Summary: Covid has taught us the importance of taking action for a sustainable future. The unchecked growth of waste products like plastic and electronic waste poses immense threats to human health, wildlife, and the environment, ultimately affecting societal and economic structures as seen in the recent Covid crisis. Proper waste management and innovation in sustainable technologies are urgently needed. The circular economy and green technology offer solutions to this challenge. The article provides an overview of the current scenario and discusses measures taken or being considered to address these issues.

The electrical conductivity of solution-processed nanosheet networks

Adam C. Kelly et al.

Summary: This review highlights the potential of solution-processed networks of 2D nanosheets for applications in printed electronics, and emphasizes the significant role of inter-sheet junctions in determining the electrical characteristics of these networks. The study reveals that the morphology of the network heavily influences the properties of the inter-sheet junctions, which in turn control the electrical performance of the network.

Printable two-dimensional superconducting monolayers

Jing Li et al.

Summary: A mild electrochemical exfoliation method has been developed to synthesize large-size, high crystallinity two-dimensional superconductor monolayers, enabling the fabrication of twisted van der Waals heterostructures and printed films. This method yields 2DSC monolayers with unconventional Ising pair superconductivity and enhanced upper critical field, with NbSe2 achieving a high yield of large single-crystal monolayers up to 300 μm. The resulting twisted NbSe2 vdWHs exhibit high stability, good interfacial properties, and modulation of critical current by magnetic field interaction.

High-mobility patternable MoS2 percolating nanofilms

Xiangxiang Gao et al.

Summary: The fabrication of scalable semiconducting films of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) for field-effect transistors (FETs) through layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly is demonstrated in this study. The percolating nanofilms of PDDA/MoS2 exhibit controlled and self-limited growth on various substrates, and can be easily patterned through lift-off processes. FETs fabricated on these MoS2 nanofilms show promising mobility and on/off ratios, with the potential for large-scale flexible electronics production using solution-processed 2D semiconductors.

A tool for identifying green solvents for printed electronics

Christian Larsen et al.

Summary: A tool has been developed to identify functional green solvents for solution-processed printed electronics, organizing solvents based on Hansen solubility parameters, ink properties, and sustainability descriptors to provide suggestions for green alternative solvents with similar dissolution capacity as current non-sustainable solvents. The tool has been successfully used in a case study to replace a non-desired solvent with two benign alternatives, and is freely available online to support the development of a sustainable ubiquitous technology in the field of printed electronics.
