Tuning the Transport Properties of Gases in Porous Graphene Membranes with Controlled Pore Size and Thickness

Timur Ashirov et al.

Summary: This study introduces a pore-narrowing approach via gold deposition onto porous graphene surfaces to enhance gas separation efficiency. Through a systematic method, the ideal combination of pore size and membrane thickness is determined to achieve high selectivity and permeance. By comparing the binding energies of gas molecules with the Au surface, the increased surface-gas interactions and molecular-sieving effect with decreasing pore size are explained.

Structure Evolution of Graphitic Surface upon Oxidation: Insights by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Shaoxian Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the structure of epoxy clusters formed during oxidation was determined using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope operating at 4 K. The experimental data was quantitatively verified by the van der Waals density functional theory. Three distinct nanostructures corresponding to three stages of evolution of vacancy defects were found. It was observed that epoxy trimers minimize the energy in the cyclic structure, and they grow into honeycomb superstructures to form larger clusters. Vacancy defects only evolve in the larger clusters in the middle of the cluster, indicating the role of lattice strain in the generation of vacancies. Semiquinone groups were also present at the carbon edge in the vacancy defects. Heating the clusters to 800 degrees C resulted in the loss of the entire epoxy population and the formation of cluster-free vacancy defects, indicating reversible functionalization of epoxy groups.

Polybenzimidazole copolymer derived lacey carbon film for graphene transfer and contamination removal strategies for imaging graphene nanopores

Luis Francisco Villalobos et al.

Summary: A novel strategy is proposed to fabricate a polymer film with transparent windows to address the issue of residues when observing nanoporous graphene using TEM. The polymer film is transformed into a carbon film with transparent windows, enabling residue-free transfer to the TEM grid without direct contact with the nanopores.

Exponentially selective molecular sieving through angstrom pores

P. Z. Sun et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully demonstrated the creation of angstrom-sized pores in monolayer graphene through low intensity exposure to low kV electrons, through which helium and hydrogen can permeate easily while larger species like xenon and methane are blocked. Gas transport through these pores experience activation barriers that increase quadratically with molecules' kinetic diameter.

Millisecond lattice gasification for high-density CO2- and O2-sieving nanopores in single-layer graphene

Shiqi Huang et al.

Summary: This study reports a millisecond carbon gasification chemistry that incorporates high density of oxygen clusters, evolving into CO2-sieving vacancy defects under controlled and predictable gasification conditions. A statistical distribution of nanopore lattice isomers is observed, and the technique is scalable.
