Regarding fracture plane with minimum toughness and fracture anisotropy associated with elongated grain boundaries in ultra-fine-grained Cu

Shoudao Qu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the relationship between microstructure and fracture toughness of ultrafine-grained Cu produced by equal channel angular pressing. The results show that the crack initiation and crack growth toughness increase with the inclination angle between the crack plane and the grain elongation plane. Micro-void nucleation and growth along elongated grain boundaries contribute to the enhancement of fracture toughness.
