Diversity, phenology and distribution of mayfly larvae (Ephemeroptera) along an altitudinal gradient in two permanent Wadis of Algeria

Amina Yalles-Satha et al.

Summary: The research focused on studying the diversity and distribution of Ephemeroptera fauna in the Wadis of Seybouse and Kebir-Rhumel in northeastern Algeria. A total of 399 mayfly larvae were collected and classified into eight species from the two Wadis, with two endemic species found. This study represents the first checklist of mayflies in this region, shedding light on the poorly studied taxonomy of mayflies in the area.

New records, distribution and phenology of hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) in semi-arid habitats in northeastern Algeria

Nadjoua Mebarkia et al.

Summary: The study aimed to increase understanding of hoverfly communities in different environments in semi-arid Northeast of Algeria to enhance their bioindicator potential. It was found that unpolluted and polluted riverbanks, as well as plant nursery, had the highest species richness of hoverflies, while the lowest species numbers were found in prickly pear plantations, cypress hedge, and olive orchard.

Culicoidesbiting midges and mosquito fauna at three dog and cat shelters in rural and periurban areas in Northern Spain

M. A. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The diversity and abundance of Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) and mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) were studied in three animal protection centers in Northern Spain. UV-light traps were found to be more effective in trapping biting midges and mosquitoes compared to incandescent light traps. The epidemiological relevance of the most prevalent species was also discussed.

Culicoides biting midges involved in transmission of haemoproteids

Rita Ziegyte et al.

Summary: This study collected various Culicoides species using UV traps and sticky traps in bird nest boxes, and identified Culicoides kibunensis as a new natural vector of Haemoproteus minutus. Haemoproteid DNA was detected in females from five Culicoides species, providing insights into the epizootiology of avian Haemoproteus infections.

Cardinium symbiosis as a potential confounder of mtDNA based phylogeographic inference in Culicoides imicola (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), a vector of veterinary viruses

Jack Pilgrim et al.

Summary: The study reveals a linkage disequilibrium between the endosymbiont Cardinium and mitochondria in Culicoides imicola populations, indicating potential gene flow of the endosymbiont within the Mediterranean basin. Mitotype variations between Eastern and Western Mediterranean basins mirror Cardinium-infection heterogeneity, cautioning against the sole use of the COI marker for determining population structure and movement in C. imicola. Additional molecular markers are suggested for complementing the assessment of population structure and gene flow.

Genetic variation, DNA barcoding and blood meal identification of Culicoides Latreille biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in Thailand

Panya Jomkumsing et al.

Summary: This study examined DNA barcoding and host blood source identification in Culicoides biting midges from Thailand, revealing high levels of genetic variation and the possibility of cryptic species in some taxa. Additionally, the study found that some Culicoides taxa fed on chicken blood, which was previously unknown.

Spatial and temporal distribution of Culicoides species in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia between 1990 and 2018

Biniam T. Lakew et al.

Summary: Culicoides marksi and C. austropalpalis were found to be the most abundant and widespread species in the New England region of NSW, Australia, with higher counts observed in the summer season. There was significant geographic variation in abundance for C. marksi, C. austropalpalis, and C. dycei at different altitudes. The study highlighted the importance of temperature and rainfall on the distribution and abundance of Culicoides species in the region.

Akabane virus infection in Eastern Mediterranean Region in Turkey: Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) as a possible vector

Seval Bilge Dagalp et al.

Summary: The prevalence of AKAV infection in cattle, sheep, and goats in Turkey's Eastern Mediterranean region was 44.74%, 22.90%, and 14.52%, respectively, with an overall prevalence of 32.89%. AKAV-specific nucleic acid was detected in 1.13% of cattle and 1.74% of sheep. No goats tested positive for AKAV RNA. The study identified potential AKAV vectors in the region as the Culicoides schultzei complex, Culicoides longipennis, and Culicoides circumscriptus.
