Detection of different colistin resistance mechanisms among multidrug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates in Bulgaria

Rumyana Markovska et al.

Summary: This study aimed to reveal the prevalence and mechanisms of colistin resistance among multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates collected in Bulgaria. It was found that carbapenemases and mgrB alterations played a key role in colistin resistance, particularly in the ST11 clone. These findings are of great importance for the control of the spread and development of colistin-resistant strains.

Global colistin use: a review of the emergence of resistant Enterobacterales and the impact on their genetic basis

Ulrike Binsker et al.

Summary: The global rise of MDR and XDR Enterobacterales in human medicine has led to the reintroduction of colistin as a last-resort drug. However, the use of colistin in veterinary medicine has resulted in a steadily increasing prevalence of resistant isolates in livestock and meat-based food. The transmission of resistant isolates from animals to humans, acquiring resistance through food, and exposure to colistin in clinical settings have contributed to the increased prevalence of colistin-resistant Enterobacterales in humans. This study focuses on the understanding of chromosomal-mediated resistance mechanisms in Enterobacterales, providing an overview of the genes involved in colistin resistance and the global situation of colistin-resistant Enterobacterales.

Mobilized colistin resistance (mcr) genes from 1 to 10: a comprehensive review

Nadheema Hammood Hussein et al.

Summary: Colistin resistance is becoming a growing global concern as a last-resort treatment option. The discovery of plasmid-mediated mcr genes has raised alarm due to their potential for global dissemination. Various mcr variants, from mcr-1 to mcr-10, have been identified in different sources, highlighting the need for better stewardship and proper antimicrobial usage to combat resistance.
