Atomic-scale evidence of chemical short-range order in CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy

Lingling Zhou et al.

Summary: This study provides experimental evidence for the existence of chemical short-range order (CSRO) in CrCoNi alloy through electron diffraction and atomic-resolution chemical mapping. The spatial correlations between different atomic pairs are revealed through quantitative covariance analysis. The findings are significant for understanding CSRO in multi-principal-element solutions.

Theory of history-dependent multi-layer generalized stacking fault energy- A modeling of the micro-substructure evolution kinetics in chemically ordered medium-entropy alloys

Peijun Yu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a chemical order related concept of history-dependent multi-layer generalized stacking fault energy and validates it using a neural network interatomic potential. The impacts of history dependence and interlayer coupling effect on the alloy structure are demonstrated by computing the fault energy for different shear deformation pathways.

Ab initio prediction of vacancy energetics in HCP Al-Hf-Sc-Ti-Zr high entropy alloys and the subsystems

Xi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, ab initio density-functional-theory calculations were used to investigate the vacancy formation and migration energies in HCP Al-Hf-Sc-Ti-Zr high entropy alloys (HEAs) and their subsystems. The temperature-dependent formation Gibbs energies and averaged atomic environments were obtained using the special quasi-random structure approach and statistical analysis. It was found that the temperature-dependent vacancy formation Gibbs energy had a negative configurational entropy contribution. The local cluster expansion technique was applied to explore extended vacancy migration phase spaces.

Screw dislocation mobility in a face-centered cubic solid solution with short-range order

Anas Abu-Odeh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of short-range ordering (SRO) on screw dislocation mobility in Ni-10%Al alloy using molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that the onset of SRO leads to a change in the threshold stress and a decrease in damping in the linear regime of dislocation velocity and shear stress. The presence of a diffuse anti-phase boundary (DAPB) reduces the stress threshold for dislocation motion without significantly affecting the linear damping at the temperatures studied.

Four Generations of High-Dimensional Neural Network Potentials

Joerg Behler

Summary: Machine learning potentials have become an important tool in atomistic simulations over the past 25 years. The development of high-dimensional neural network potentials (HDNNPs) has allowed for the simulation of large systems with thousands of atoms, with continuous advancements leading to the emergence of fourth-generation HDNNPs. Despite some limitations, the future outlook for HDNNPs is promising with potential for further developments.

Nengbin Hua et al.

Summary: The study on TixZrNbTaMo high entropy alloys revealed excellent properties in hardness, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance, with improvement in wear resistance in phosphate buffer saline solution as the titanium content decreases. The Ti0.5ZrNbTaMo alloy showed the highest corrosive wear resistance among the four HEAs due to its superior mechanical properties and chemical stability.

Order and Disorder in Amorphous and High-Entropy Materials

XueHui Yan et al.

Summary: Order and disorder, as well as the concept of entropy, play important roles in high-entropy alloys and amorphous alloys in materials science. Increasing disorder or entropy in materials is often necessary to meet complex performance requirements. Further research is needed to explore the role of entropy stabilization in high-entropy ceramics.

Magnetically driven short-range order can explain anomalous measurements in CrCoNi

Flynn Walsh et al.

Summary: The presence, nature, and impact of chemical short-range order in the multi-principal element alloy CrCoNi are currently under debate, with first-principles calculations revealing a magnetic origin to this phenomenon. Models based on magnetic interactions are found to explain experimental anomalies, suggesting that short-range order of this type may be more common than previously realized.

Machine learning potentials for extended systems: a perspective

Joerg Behler et al.

Summary: In the past two and a half decades, machine learning potentials have evolved to become a broadly applicable tool for large-scale atomistic simulations, combining efficiency and accuracy. These models exploit the locality of atomic properties and can include long-range interactions, even for systems with non-local charge transfer. Challenges and limitations of current approaches are also discussed.
