Hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms in advanced high strength steel

Peng Gong et al.

Summary: Hydrogen embrittlement is increasingly important in advanced high strength steels as strength levels increase. This study provides a detailed understanding of the embrittling mechanism in model AHHS steels and reveals significant differences in hydrogen trapping behavior between different steel compositions. The effects of hydrogen on strength and ductility are investigated through various tests, showing a loss in strength and ductility for both steel compositions.

A cracking oxygen story: A new view of stress corrosion cracking in titanium alloys

Sudha Joseph et al.

Summary: This study investigates the presence of oxygen and hydrogen at crack tips in an industrial titanium alloy. The results show that crack tips are enriched in oxygen, while the amount of hydrogen is relatively low. The authors suggest that the combined effect of oxygen and hydrogen leads to cracking, with oxygen playing a vital role in embrittlement.

Model of vacancy diffusion-assisted intergranular corrosion in low-alloy steel

Pratyush Mishra et al.

Summary: The paper presents a model for intergranular corrosion of nonsensitized low-carbon pipeline steels, where enhanced grain boundary oxidation is explained by vacancies produced by reactive Si atoms. Experimental evidence supports the role of vacancy diffusion in the evolution of IGC, with calculations showing agreement with experimental measurements. The rationalization of sharpening of GB grooves over time during corrosion exposures and the quantitative explanation of IGC enhancement by vacancy diffusion without solute segregation or precipitation at GBs are key findings.

Effect of Phase Transformation on Stress Corrosion Behavior of Additively Manufactured Austenitic Stainless Steel Produced by Directed Energy Deposition

Tomer Ron et al.

Summary: The stress corrosion behavior of additively manufactured austenitic stainless steel was evaluated compared to wrought alloy via electrochemical analysis and slow strain rate testing. Despite differences in microstructure and mechanical properties, both materials showed similar electrochemical performance and stress corrosion susceptibility. Corrosion in the additively manufactured alloy mainly concentrated at the interface between the austenitic matrix and secondary ferritic phase, while the wrought alloy exhibited uniform pitting on the external surface. Both alloys exhibited ductile failure in post-SSRT experiments.

Carbon redistribution in quenched and tempered lath martensite

L. Morsdorf et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tempering-induced carbon redistribution in martensitic steels, revealing the formation and dissolution of carbon clusters in the as-quenched state, and the simultaneous precipitation of carbides at carbon-rich dislocation cores during tempering. The dislocation network plays a crucial role as a carbon diffusion path in the process.

Hydrogen fracture maps for sheared-edge-controlled hydrogen-delayed fracture of 1180 MPa advanced high-strength steels

Huixing Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated hydrogen-induced delayed fracture (HIDF) of 1180 MPa martensitic, dual-phase, and quenched and partitioned advanced high-strength steels using shear-cut U-bend specimens. HIDF initiation was found to be largely independent of bending strain and controlled by the sheared edge, with a hydrogen enhanced plasticity (HEP) mechanism causing HIDF. Variations in HIDF responses of the three steels were attributed to the interactions between microstructures and stress/strains introduced by shearing, while shear burr arrangement was determined to have little influence.

Laser powder bed fusion of high-entropy alloy particle-reinforced stainless steel with enhanced strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance

Chen Zhang et al.

Summary: Through the use of high-entropy alloy as a strengthening phase, stainless-steel composites processed via laser powder bed fusion achieved simultaneous improvements in strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance. The high strength was achieved through high-entropy alloy nanoparticles and high-density dislocations, while the improved ductility was attributed to the semi-obstructive effect of the interface on dislocations.

Improvement of hydrogen embrittlement resistance by intense pulsed ion beams for a martensitic steel

Y. F. Jiang et al.

Summary: The study shows that intense pulsed ion beams (IPIB) can improve hydrogen embrittlement resistance in lath martensitic steel by reducing carbon segregation at grain boundaries and forming high carbon martensite in the treated layer. It suggests that carbon segregation at grain boundaries is one of the main factors leading to high hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility in the investigated steel.

Effect of microstructure on corrosion behavior of high strength martensite steel-A literature review

Li Wang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the influence of microstructure on the corrosion behavior of high strength martensite steels, including pitting and intergranular corrosion. Factors such as precipitation, dislocation, and grain/lath boundaries are discussed as crack nucleation and hydrogen traps in these steels. Additionally, the beneficial effects of retained/reversed austenite on corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking sensitivity are explored, as well as ideas for designing new high strength martensite steels.
