Stress fibres are embedded in a contractile cortical network

Timothee Vignaud et al.

Summary: This study reveals the mechanical impact of interconnected actomyosin bundles on the production and distribution of traction forces within cells. Experimental and modeling results show that these bundles are embedded in a continuous and contractile network, and the propagation of their contraction throughout the cell is dependent on this embedding. The mechanism of stress fibre assembly through the coalescence of actin filaments in the cell cortex enables the transmission of mechanical forces throughout the entire cell.

Cyclic stretching-induced epithelial cell reorientation is driven by microtubule-modulated transverse extension during the relaxation phase

Jui-Chien Lien et al.

Summary: The reorientation of adherent cells upon uniaxial cyclic stretching is primarily driven by relaxation phase, during which rapid global retraction and extension transverse to the direction of stretching take place. Myosin II inhibition causes cells to orient along the direction of stretching, while disassembly of microtubules enhances transverse reorientation. This study highlights the distinct roles of stretching and relaxation in cell reorientation.
