Single Ice Crystal Growth with Controlled Orientation during Directional Freezing

Tongxin Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an in situ study on the solid/liquid interface morphology evolution of directionally solidified single crystal ice in PVA solutions, revealing multifaceted and V-shaped lamellar morphologies for the first time. Quantitative characterizations on lamellar spacing, tilt angle, and tip undercooling of lamellar ice platelets provide a clearer insight into the ice growth habit in polymeric aqueous systems, suggesting significant impact on future design and optimization in porous biomaterials.

Multi-scale structuring of cell-instructive cellulose nanocrystal composite hydrogel sheets via sequential electrospinning and thermal wrinkling

Kevin J. De France et al.

Summary: By using a two-step process based on electrospinning and thermal wrinkling, structured hydrogels with microscale wrinkles and nanoscale fibers were prepared, allowing independent control of fiber orientation/density and wrinkle geometry. These highly tunable structures provide new possibilities for studying multi-scale morphology in the field of biomaterials.

Spatially-directed angiogenesis using ultrasound-controlled release of basic fibroblast growth factor from acoustically-responsive scaffolds

Leidan Huang et al.

Summary: Vascularization following tissue implantation is crucial for viability, and the ability to spatially control this process using acoustically responsive scaffolds has been demonstrated in this study. The study found that spatially-defined patterns of acoustic droplet vaporization can elicit spatially-defined patterns of angiogenesis.

Topological structure of electrospun membrane regulates immune response, angiogenesis and bone regeneration

Shue Jin et al.

Summary: The study illustrates that different topological structures of fibrous membranes have a significant impact on bone regeneration performance, with latticed PFCH membranes showing superior abilities to recruit macrophages and induce angiogenesis. Through rat and mice models, it was found that latticed PFCH membranes promote angiogenesis by upregulating the HIF-1 alpha signaling pathway, thereby enhancing bone regeneration.

Tilting Behavior of Lamellar Ice Tip during Unidirectional Freezing of Aqueous Solutions

Tongxin Zhang et al.

Summary: The freezing of ice has been extensively studied, with a focus on its complex pattern formation. This study examines the tilted growth behavior of lamellar ice tips under different conditions, revealing sensitivity to pulling velocity and solute type. The results suggest an intrinsic tilted growth behavior of lamellar ice, which contributes to a deeper understanding of ice pattern formation in relevant physical processes.
