Engineering Optically Active Defects in Hexagonal Boron Nitride Using Focused Ion Beam and Water

Evgenii Glushkov et al.

Summary: This study systematically explores the physical processes involved in creating optically active defects in hBN using FIB, and found that the interaction between the ion beam and the substrate plays a key role in defect formation. The researchers confirmed their findings using transmission electron microscopy and super-resolution optical microscopy, and pinpointed the exact location of emitters within the defect sites. This lays the foundation for engineered applications of optically active defects in hBN with high spatial and spectral control.

Super-resolved Optical Mapping of Reactive Sulfur-Vacancies in Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Miao Zhang et al.

Summary: Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a class of exciting semiconducting two-dimensional (2D) materials, where defects and their molecular interactions with the environment can significantly impact their properties. In this study, a new mapping method was demonstrated to locate sulfur-deficient defects in 2D-TMDs in aqueous solutions using fluorescence labeling with thiol chemistry. This approach allows precise localization of defects and control over Foster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process, revealing grain boundaries and line defects, as well as investigating binding kinetics under varying pH conditions.

Field-Dependent Dehydration and Optimal Ionic Escape Paths for C2N Membranes

Miraslau L. Barabash et al.

Summary: The study highlights the challenges of analytically interpreting ion transport through subnanometer pores under finite bias, and emphasizes the importance of utilizing detailed computer simulations to identify field-induced phenomena. By analyzing probability distributions of ionic escape trajectories in atomistic models, the researchers identify two distinct mechanisms contributing to field-induced changes in transport-opposing barriers. Comparing simulated current-voltage characteristics with the solution of the 1D Nernst-Planck model reveals consistency with the observed changes in the optimal ion escape path.
