Molecular origins of Epoxy-Amine/Iron oxide interphase formation

Suzanne Morsch et al.

Summary: The hypothesis of this study is that interphase properties in composites, adhesives, and protective coatings can be predicted based on the interfacial interactions between polymeric precursor molecules and the inorganic surface during network formation. The researchers applied conventional analysis techniques, atomic force microscopy coupled with infrared (AFM-IR), and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the molecular interactions and properties of nanocomposite specimens. The findings revealed the presence of under-cured interphase regions and the excess of epoxy functionality near the particle surfaces, and demonstrated the driving force for molecular orientation and raised Tg values in the goethite composite samples.

Significant Improvements in Dielectric Constant and Energy Density of Ferroelectric Polymer Nanocomposites Enabled by Ultralow Contents of Nanofillers

Li Li et al.

Summary: This study reports the incorporation of low-K Cd1-xZnxSe1-ySy nanodots into a ferroelectric polymer, resulting in significant increases in K and E-b of polymer composites and outperforming current dielectric materials. The observed dielectric enhancement is attributed to structural changes induced by the nanodot fillers, including transformation of polymer chain conformation and induced interfacial dipoles, as confirmed by density functional theory calculations. This work provides a new experimental route to scalable high-energy-density polymer dielectrics and advances the fundamental understanding of dielectric behavior at atomistic scales.

Mobility gradients yield rubbery surfaces on top of polymer glasses

Zhiwei Hao et al.

Summary: Many emerging materials, such as ultrastable glasses, owe their properties to a gradient of enhanced mobility at the surface of glass-forming liquids. This surface mobility enhancement has reshaped our understanding of glass formers behavior, especially in polymeric glasses with a two-scale nature of glassy polymer surfaces. The emergence of a transient rubbery surface behavior in polymers with short chains is driven by superposed gradients in segmental dynamics and chain conformational statistics, leading to a breakdown in time-temperature superposition.
