Plasmonic Temperature-Programmed Desorption

Colin J. Murphy et al.

Summary: Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) is a method widely used in surface science to determine the bonding strength and coverage of molecular mono- or multilayers on a surface. Traditional TPD using mass spectrometric readout may have issues as the signal can come from other surfaces in the chamber, while plasmonic TPD directly measures the surface coverage of molecular species adsorbed on metal nanoparticles under ultrahigh vacuum conditions.

Real-time nanoplasmonic sensing of three-dimensional morphological changes in a supported lipid bilayer and antimicrobial testing applications

Bo Kyeong Yoon et al.

Summary: This study developed a real-time biosensing strategy to detect three-dimensional morphological changes in supported lipid bilayers on a plasmonic substrate. The concept was validated by triggering specific three-dimensional membrane morphological changes through the addition of antimicrobial fatty acids and other compounds. Different remodeling events were detected by distinct measurement signatures, which can be applicable to various biosensing techniques.

Solvent-induced conformational tuning of lysozyme protein adlayers on silica surfaces: A QCM-D and LSPR study

Bo Kyeong Yoon et al.

Summary: The adsorption behavior of lysozyme proteins strongly depends on the ethanol fraction in a non-monotonic fashion, influenced by competing effects of water and ethanol solvation on protein size and conformational stability. The degree of protein conformational flexibility has a greater impact on the hydrodynamic properties of lysozyme adlayers than solvation effects alone.

Stabilization of Plasmonic Silver Nanostructures with Ultrathin Oxide Coatings Formed Using Atomic Layer Deposition

Arin S. Preston et al.

Summary: Silver is highly regarded as a plasmonic material in the electromagnetic spectrum, but its properties degrade easily in operating environments. The emergence of shell-isolated plasmonic nanostructures offers new opportunities for utilizing silver, and the atomic layer deposition technique can be used to design these structures for better durability evaluation.

Unraveling How Multivalency Triggers Shape Deformation of Sub-100 nm Lipid Vesicles

Hyeonjin Park et al.

Summary: This study tracked the attachment of sub-100 nm lipid vesicles to a streptavidin-functionalized supported lipid bilayer using LSPR sensing technique and developed an analytical model to extract quantitative details. The findings reveal how varying the surface densities of streptavidin receptors and biotin ligands affects nanometer-scale vesicle deformation, identifying a critical ligand density where appreciable vesicle deformation began. These results provide insight into the interplay between membrane bending energy and multivalent binding interaction energy in various multivalent ligand-receptor systems.
