Operando Methods in Electrocatalysis

Yao Yang et al.

Summary: Electrocatalysis is crucial for advancing renewable energy technologies, and understanding the structure and reaction mechanisms of electrocatalysts at electrode-electrolyte interfaces is fundamental. In situ and operando techniques, such as operando synchrotron-based X-ray techniques and in situ atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy, provide valuable insights into the interfacial structural and compositional changes under reaction conditions, aiding in the study of charge transfer kinetics and reaction mechanisms. The continuous development of these techniques will contribute significantly to establishing structure/composition-reactivity correlations of electrocatalysts at unprecedented atomic-scale and molecular levels under realistic, real-time reaction conditions.

In Situ Activation of a Manganese Perovskite Oxygen Reduction Catalyst in Concentrated Alkaline Media

Yoshitaka Aoki et al.

Summary: This study reports in situ activation of ORR catalysis on manganese perovskite in a concentrated alkaline solution, mediated by the spontaneous formation of oxygen vacancy sites. Experimental results show that the exchange current and electron number of the ORR on La0.7Sr0.3Mn0.9Ni0.1O3 significantly increase with the duration of the ORR when the KOH concentration is greater than 4 M, while remaining unchanged at less than 1 M KOH concentration.

Epitaxial Thin-Film Spinel Oxides as Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts in Alkaline Media

Yao Yang et al.

Summary: Designing nonprecious electrocatalysts with Co-doped Fe3O4 thin films prepared using molecular beam epitaxy on single-crystal MgO substrates has shown promising ORR activity in alkaline media. The Co-doped Fe3O4 with a 15% Co-doping level achieved optimal ORR activity due to the maximum number of Co active sites without impacting the Fe3O4 matrix conductivity.
